The BYD Qin hybrid super sedan will be launched on the China car market in November. Price will start around 200.000 yuan without government subsidies. With subsidies price can go down as far as 160.000 yuan, and that isn’t much money for 303 horses.

The Qin is powered by a hybrid drivetrain consisting of a 1.5 liter turbo four cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor. BYD claims a combined output of  303hp and 440nm, making the Qin the most powerful mass-market hybrid passenger car on earth.

Top speed is 185km/h and 0-100 takes 6.9 seconds. The 1.5 turbo poops out 154hp, the electric motor another 149. BYD claims a combined fuel consumption of 2 liters per 100 kilometer.

Interestingly, BYD earlier claimed a combined output of 315hp, with the petrol engine delivering 165hp and the electric motor 150. The new claim is 12 hp down, but the performance figures are exactly the same.

Mad rear lights are the best part of the Qin. Pure art! The Qin is expected to sell well, due to its power. It it does sell well, the Qin will prove what we always say: Chinese car buyers don’t buy hybrids and EV’s because environment or fuel consumption, they don’t care, but when a hybrid or EV offers lots of power for the cash they will be very interested indeed.

  1. Great. A death trap for new car buyers. It would be great to see how many accidents this model is in compared to a toyota corolla in the first 6 months of ownership. Chinese do not need more power in their cars.

  2. I am going to have to go test drive it and see if they learned to connect the wheels to the body yet or if they totally feel disconnected still.

  3. Test drove a BYD Qin yesterday. I was expecting to be disappointed with a car that failed to live upnto the hype. Disappointingly for some critics, the Qin is actually very good indeed! It impressed me enough to buy one (delivery after Chinese New Year) so I might come back here, from time to time, to report how it is doing.
