New spy shots show the BYD-Daimler Denza EV is finally getting somewhere. Debut for the production version is scheduled for the Guangzhou Auto Show in late November. The Denza debuted as a concept on the 2012 Beijing Auto Show and was back as a prototype on the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show.

BYD-Daimler is a joint venture between BYD Automobile and Daimler-Benz, aimed at making affordable electric cars for the Chinese auto market. The full name of the venture is ‘Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology’ (BDNT), it was established in March 2012. The Denza is their first car, based on the old Benz B-Class with the electric power train of the BYD e6.

According to the original plans Denza was to become a brand selling various electric cars and other green vehicles. The first Denza however has been delayed big time by technical problems and battles fights misunderstandings between the two partners, making for a slim chance for a second car, let alone any more.

The Denze will be launched on the China car market in the first half of 2014. However, not everybody will be able to buy one. Denza will start with dealers in only three cities; Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, the latter being the home town of BYD-Daimler and BYD.

Original concept didn’t have any chrome. Won’t help sales. Nobody in China buys EV’s. Chromed grille or not.

  1. “Nobody in China buys EV’s.”
Why would they since there is no infrastructure to support them…..
So far the government has been talking the talk, but not walking the walk, by subsidizing infrastructure development. Perhaps because it lacks the profit incentive of the current fossil fuel infrastructure.

  2. just to tell another time to everybody. Get a charging point at your home garage is easy, don’t need any special procedure. I live in Shenzhen, where it need just a phone call to China southern grid, and have your charging point installed everywhere you need in few day. The installation is for free, then the cost of the elettricity is very convenient , around 5 times less then the gasoline to make the same road.
I wish that car news china will correct it’s wrong policy about electric cars

    • @ Marco. Hello! We do not have a ‘policy’ about electric cars. Furthermore, how many Chinese homes have their own home garage? that’s less than a percent at best. Shenzhen is a special case anyway because it is BYD’s hometown, so they have all kinds of experimental programs going on for many years. however, it isn’t like that in the rest of the country. here in Beijing, i can’t get a charging point in my home garage (which i don’t have…).

  3. @Tycho. I am also living in a apartment in a big building and i just recharge my car in a common garage area , the same is where is my office .
I think that the people is just not aware about how to get his charging point at their location.
China southern grid is a major provider of electricity in all south China and i am sure that this service is available everywhere people ask for it to them.
I am also pretty sure that the same service is available in other big cities that have their own electricity provider.
The bad point is that this service is not advertised and most of the people, even in the automotive professionals, don’t simply know about it existence.
