The sorta speedy MG5 Turbo, also known as MG5 1.5T, debuted today at the 2013 Guangzhou Auto Show, and it was launched on the China car market at the same time. Price starts at 119.700 yuan and ends at 140.700 yuan. The MG5 Turbo differs from its naturally aspirated sister by a red stripe in the grille and a chrome bar in the bumper.

The interior comes with seats that look a little bit more sporty and a few MG5 Turbo badges. Power comes from a turbocharged 1.5 liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 129hp 135hp and 210nm, mated to a new 6-speed automatic gearbox. If 135 horses doesn’t sound like a lot, remember that the non-turbo version has only 109hp. These Chinese MG cars are no racers yet…

  1. White is certainly not the most flattering colour for this model, it makes it look like a beached whale, particularly with the inevitably (for a Chinese car) too small wheels. It’s generally an attractive, clean, and distinctive shape though.

Interior looks messy and the materials look cheap.

The unforgiveable issue is the engine though. A higher power unit is hardly rocket science. Why can’t SAIC invest in some more suitable engines for MG? Laziness? It surely can’t be a lack of money.
