The Porsche 918 hybrid hyper car will be launched on the China car market in early 2014 but Porsche was kind enough to prematurely post the prices on their Chinese website. Hold on, your heart. The 918 is ridiculously expensive, even for Chinese standards.

The base 918 Spyder will cost 13.388 million yuan. That is 2.19 million U.S. dollar. The 918 Spyder Weissach Package will cost 14.635 million yuan. That is 2.39 million U.S dollar.

Price in the United States is set at 845.000 USD for the Spyder and 929.000 USD for the Spyder Wessach Package. The difference is is more than a million USD for each version. Sure China has high import taxes, but not this high. A 50% tax-price hike is considered normal, which still leaves half a million USD.

Fat profits for Porsche, playing it hard on the overly eager Chinese super car buyers who are willing to pay any price to get their hands on a 918. Smart in the short term, but this kind of practices will hurt the brand’s reputation in the long term.
