Designed for females, 2023 Geely Icon Protagonist launched in China, starts at 17,000 USD

On May 14, Geely launched a new model called “Protagonist” under its Icon series priced at 118,900 RMB (17,000 USD). The new car has a theme called Independent Female, specifically targeting the female consumer group. The Geely Icon was first launched in 2020. The Icon is based on Geely’s BMA platform that also underpins, among others, the Geely Binyue & Proton X50, the Geely Binrui, and the Lynk & Co 06.

Overall, the Icon Protagonist offers more configurations than the entry-level Icon Chocolate version, including level 2 advanced driving assistance functions such as collision warning and lane departure assistance supported by a front radar, a built-in driving recorder, 540-degree panoramic image for navigation and parking, mobile phone remote control, and automatic cockpit cleaning. Geely claims that these newly added functions are targeted toward female drivers.

Positioned as a small SUV, the size of the Icon Protagonist is 4350/1815/1620mm with a 2640mm wheelbase. In terms of appearance, the exterior adopts a dual-color body design in volcanic gray + neon purple, the popular hidden door handles, and the car runs on 19-inch wheels.

The front seats support seating. The rear row has an armrest area.

Other new features include an electric tailgate and a rear curtain.

The interior has a warm vibe with the light blue fabric decoration against the beige background and 72-color ambient lights. Most notably, it has a three-spoke steering wheel wrapped with black materials, a 10.25-inch instrument panel, and a 12.3-inch central control screen. Infotainment is supported by the Galaxy OS system. Below the central control screen are two air conditioning outlets. The center console looks busy with a rotary knob, a gear stick, and cup holders.

Additionally, the cockpit supports facial recognition and voice interaction to interact with the infotainment system.

Power comes from a 1.5T engine with a maximum power of 133 kW and a peak torque of 290 Nm, mated to a 7-speed DCT. Its maximum speed is 200 km/h, the official 100 km/h acceleration time is 7.9 seconds, and the comprehensive fuel consumption is 6.3L/100km, according to the carmaker.
