Recently, BYD announced a significant milestone for its BYD Dolphin electric vehicle (EV), revealing that it has achieved sales of over 462,000 units in the two years since its launch. The BYD Dolphin entered the market in August 2021, with initial sales of 1,755 units that month. Since then, its popularity has continued to soar. Notably, in August 2023, BYD Dolphin recorded sales of 32,745 units, equating to an average of more than 1,000 units sold daily.
A noteworthy trend is the expansion of BYD Dolphin’s market reach beyond China. With increased production capacity, BYD Dolphin has begun supplying markets in the Asia Pacific and Latin America. In 2021, 27 units of this model were exported, followed by 1,303 units in 2022. From January to August 2023, 28,387 units were shipped, and this figure is expected to continue growing, solidifying BYD Dolphin’s status as one of BYD’s main overseas models.

The BYD Dolphin is a compact electric hatchback that appeals to young, tech-savvy consumers. It is available in three models with price ranges from 111,000 to 131,000 RMB (15,200 USD to 18,000 USD). Built on BYD’s e-platform 3.0, it is powered by BYD LFP Blade batteries.
The BYD Dolphin offers a variety of exterior color options, including four single-color and three dual-color choices: Pupu Pink, Beibei Grey, Cheese Yellow (a newly added color), Surfing Blue, Altantis Grey, Taro Purple (also newly added), and Black. The car’s design is inspired by the tropical sunset, reflected in the ‘pink’ color choice. The exterior design has remained consistent with the current model.
In terms of dimensions, the BYD Dolphin measures 4,070 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height and boasts a 2,700 mm wheelbase, slightly smaller than VW ID.3. Customers have the option of 16 or 17-inch wheels.
The interior of the BYD Dolphin is equipped with a flat-bottom multi-function steering wheel, a 5-inch full LCD instrument panel, and a 12.8-inch floating central control screen. The center console also includes two cupholders. The vehicle offers a range of features such as real-time tire pressure monitoring, front seat heating, a 4-way electronically adjustable passenger seat, a 6-way electronically adjustable driver seat, a rear center armrest with a cup holder, front parking radar, electric exterior mirrors, and a seatbelt warning light. Furthermore, the new 2023 BYD Dolphin introduces a comfort mode in addition to the existing energy-saving, snow, and sports-driving modes.
Under the hood, the BYD Dolphin has a front permanent magnet synchronous motor in two configurations: 70 kW/180 Nm and 130 kW/290 Nm. These motor options provide corresponding pure electric cruising ranges of 420 km and 401 km, respectively. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 10.9 seconds and 7.5 seconds. The motor is paired with a 44.9 kWh BYD LFP Blade battery pack and supports 60 kW fast charging.
