Tonight the BYD Seal 06 DM-i launched at an event in Xian which also saw the unveiling of BYD’s new fifth generation DM system which is used by the car. Also launched at the event was the Qin L DM-i which is the twin car of the Seal 06 and uses the same platform. There are five models in the Seal 06 range priced from 99,800 to 139,800 yuan (13,750 – 19,300 USD) and are as follows:

Although the car uses the same platform as the Qin L it uses the design language of the BYD Ocean series and is visually based on the Seal which first debuted in 2022. As such the Seal 06 has a largely closed front with a low grille. The door handles are only semi-hidden. At the back there is a through taillight cluster on the trunk lid. The BYD logo on the rear apparently illuminates at night. Dimensions are 4830, 1875 and 1495 mm (l/w/h) and the wheelbase is 2790 mm. The Seal 06 has MacPherson suspension at the front and new E-type four-link independent suspension at the rear.

Inside the car carries over the general Ocean series look with design elements such as the dashboard and doors. There is a rotating 15.6-inch central infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch LCD instrument screen. Cars come with 6 airbags, ETC, mobile phone NFC key, automatic air conditioning, one touch window control for the driver’s side window, tire pressure monitoring system and a minimum of six-speakers.

Higher spec models add features such as a panoramic sunroof, DiPilot L2 driving assistance system, electric adjustable seat for the front passenger, dashcam, 18-inch wheels, 8 speaker sound system, and seat heating and ventilation.

Along with the Qin L the Seal 06 DM-i is the debut car for the new fifth generation DM system from BYD. It is a plug-in hybrid system based around a 1.5 liter engine with maximum power of 74 kW and 126 Nm torque. Lower spec versions have an 80 km (CLTC) all-electric range  and use a 10.08 kWh battery and an 120 kW electric motor with 210 Nm torque. Higher spec versions get the 15.874 kWh battery which gives the car a 120 kWh CLTC range. These also use the more powerful 160 kW EHS160 motor which has 260 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption is 2.9 l/100 km in NEDC mode and 10.7 kWh/100 km in CLTC mode.

  1. Is this model planned for export for LHD and RHD markets? I think BYD should actually export their rande of DMi hybrid models overseas since they are more efficient than EVs.

    • They’re mainly exporting them to emerging markets, primarily central Asia and Latin America. The BYD Qin Plus DM-i was unveiled in Mexico and Brasil as BYD King last month. And of course, the Seal-U (Song Plus) DM-i will go on sale in Australia, NZ and Europe soon.

Looks like much of the world, outside of like the US and Canada, will see some of these DM cars available within a year or two. They’re swiftly aligning with the shifting narrative about EV: want PHEV over BEV now? We’ve had that one ready long ago as well!
