On September 24, at SAIC-GM-Wuling’s (SGMW) ASEAN strategy launch conference held in Nanning, China, the joint venture unveiled its first global concept car called the “Light of ASEAN”, featuring the highly recognizable gull-wing doors.

ASEAN stands for The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, comprised of 10 countries in Southeast Asia, namely, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Brunei, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, Cambodia, Singapore, and Malaysia.

The concept car is positioned as a new energy sedan. The front face adopts an X-shaped design, combined with an elongated T-shaped through-type light strip that connects the light groups on both sides.

Another major design selling point is the large double-sided gull-wing doors that cover both the front and rear seats.

From the side, the sloped roofline is matched with blade-style rims.

The rear adopts through-type taillight groups with a matrix design and a split rear wing that extends from the C-pillar. Additionally, what’s interesting is that the center of the rear can be opened and is equipped with a movable intelligent robot.

Inside, SGMW called it a “zero-gravity dual-mode cockpit”. The rear has a sofa-style seat while the front has two unconventional design seats with an integrated legrest.

Behind the novel-shaped split steering wheel is a small instrument panel. There also seems to be some sort of glass material on the dashboard based on the environmental reflection.

At the conference, SGMW also announced its “One, Two, Three” ASEAN strategy to build a new energy vehicle industry chain within the ten ASEAN countries by 2030, including vehicle production, sales, services, finance, energy system, electronic control, and intelligent electric drive.

So far, SGMW has exported to more than 104 countries and regions, with a total global export of more than 1.07 million vehicles as of August 2024, equivalent to 6.615 billion USD. Furthermore, SGMW’s two millionth new energy vehicle rolled off the production line at the end of August.

SGMW currently sells the Wuling Red Label series, the Wuling Silver Label series, and the Baojun brand vehicles.
