On September 27th, BYD announced during a research event that its brand Fang Cheng Bao has signed a cooperation agreement with Huawei in Shenzhen.

The two companies, headquartered in Shenzhen, agreed to focus on conducting in-depth joint research and development of intelligent driving for BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao brand. The soon-to-be-launched Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8, will be the first BYD car to feature a Huawei smart-driving solution.

Huawei’s self-driving solution

BYD announced that together, they will aim to create the world’s first off-road-focused intelligent driving solution. The Fang Cheng Bao Bao 8 will launch with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 3.0 system.

Huawei announced its Qiankun ADS 3.0 system in April of this year. This new version represents a comprehensive upgrade from Huawei ADS 2.0 and an evolution in terms of mapless intelligent driving, collision avoidance, and all-scenario parking.

Road and image recognition in ADS 3.0 is vastly improved thanks to additional training data and real-life testing. The system famously allows for autonomous parking, allowing the driver to get out of the car and walk away as the car parks itself. Models part of the Huawei HIMA alliance like the Luxeed S7 have shown off this feature.

BYD says this collaboration with Huawei breaks traditional smart-driving boundaries, pushing smart-driving into the off-road space. The two companies aim to develop the world’s first exclusive off-road smart-driving solution, which will eventually be installed on other Fang Cheng Bao models in addition to the Bao 8.

Fang Cheng Bao is BYD’s luxury off-road and track-focused brand. The Bao 8 full-size SUV is the brand’s second model launching later this year for 500,000 yuan (71,000 USD). The Bao 8 has the DMO plug-in hybrid powertrain on board. Its dimensions are 5195/1994/1875 mm with a wheelbase of 2920 mm.

In addition to the Huawei Qiankun ADS 3.0 system, the Bao 8 will also feature Huawei’s HiCar system. The HiCar system is Huawei’s car mobile app that allows users to connect their phones to the car’s infotainment system, similar to Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto.

This announcement marks a major collaboration between BYD and Huawei. While the two companies have worked together to support Huawei’s HiCar in BYD cars since 2021, this latest collaboration in intelligent driving systems marks a significant step in the partnership.
