Recently, BYD revealed the Shark 6 pickup at the Bangkok Motor Show, and the price is set to be 1,699,000 Thai Baht (roughly 50k USD). The car is built on BYD’s DMO platform, featuring a body-on-frame structure and independent double A-arm suspension for both the front and rear. Its dimensions are 5457/1917/ 1925 mm, with a wheelbase of 3260 mm, making it larger than the Ford Ranger, one of Thailand’s best-selling upper-tier pickups. The Shark 6 was sold to various countries, including Mexico, Australia, and Brazil. In some countries, it is named Shark instead of Shark 6.
The BYD Shark 6 is powered by a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine paired with two permanent magnet synchronous electric motors. However, the engine solely functions as a generator to charge the battery and power the motors. The combined output of the two motors reaches 321 kW (430 hp) and 650 Nm of torque, enabling the Shark 6 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. Which is quite impressive for a pickup that weighs 2710 kg. The battery used is a 29.58 kWh blade battery. The car has a combined range of 800 km.
BYD is not the first Chinese brand to introduce a pickup truck in Thailand. GWM launched the Poer Sahar back in 2024, offering three trims: Ultra 4WD, Pro, and Single Cab. All variants have the HEV system, featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor. The engine produces 182 kW (244 hp) and 380 Nm of torque, while the electric motor delivers 79 kW (106 hp) and 268 Nm of torque. The Poer Sahar is priced between 1,129,000 and 1,389,000 Thai baht (33,200 – 40,900 USD)
Thailand is the world’s second-largest market for pickup trucks, after the United States. This is mainly due to early government tax policies and the demand for multi-purpose vehicles. Diesel engines have been preferred due to the fuel’s low price and the engine’s high torque.
Before the surge of Chinese brands in Thailand, the low-to-middle-tier pickup market was dominated by Japanese models such as the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, and Mitsubishi Triton, while American models like the Ford Ranger have been key players in the mid-to-high tiers.
