The BYD Sealion 05 EV (see specs) is positioned as a city-friendly SUV. This compact SUV is built on BYD’s advanced e-Platform 3.0 Evo, which BYD claims to provide a balanced driving experience. With a price range from 117,800 to 137,800 yuan (approximately 16,160 to 18,900 USD), the Sealion 05 EV presents itself as an affordable choice for urban dwellers while delivering features and refinements that may challenge more expensive rivals. Let’s check out the BYD Sealion 05 EV on this week’s Sunday Drive China!
Exterior
The Sealion 05 EV adopts an updated version of BYD’s Ocean aesthetics design philosophy, characterised by clean lines and a modern, minimalist approach. The front fascia features sharp LED headlights connected by a distinctive light strip, while the absence of a traditional grille reinforces its electric identity. Flush door handles and blacked-out B- and C-pillars contribute to a sleek, aerodynamic profile.
Although its dimensions are only slightly bigger than those of the BYD Yuan Up—measuring 4,520 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,630 mm in height—the Sealion 05 EV maximises practicality. A 110-litre front trunk (frunk) is a notable addition, complementing the 600-litre rear cargo space, which expands to 1,460 litres with the rear seats folded. Plastic wheel arch cladding adds a rugged touch, though some may find it slightly at odds with the otherwise streamlined design.
Interior
Stepping inside, the Sealion 05 EV reveals a cabin prioritising functionality without sacrificing comfort or modernity. The dashboard is anchored by BYD’s signature 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, both crisp and responsive. The steering column-mounted gear selector frees up space on the centre console, which houses a well-organised array of physical buttons for climate control, drive modes, and audio adjustments—a welcome departure from the touchscreen-heavy interfaces of many contemporary EVs.
The interior’s thoughtful touches extend beyond the dashboard. A refrigerated storage compartment, capable of cooling to -6°C or heating to 50°C, can accommodate up to eight beverage cans, which is invaluable on longer journeys. Including a 50W wireless fast-charging pad. Rear passengers benefit from a flat floor, generous legroom, and dual-layer storage pockets, while privacy glass on higher trims enhances comfort and discretion.
Behind the Wheel
Navigating the bustling streets of Zhuhai, the Sealion 05 EV demonstrates its strengths as an urban commuter. The low dashboard and well-positioned windows provide excellent visibility, making tight manoeuvres and parking a breeze. The 360-degree camera system, accessible at any speed, offers exceptional clarity and is far superior to more expensive vehicles on the market today.
On the highway, the Sealion 05 EV continues to impress. At a steady 120 km/h, cabin noise levels measure 64 dB, rivalling luxury sedans like the BMW 5 Series. Wind and road noise are exceptionally well-suppressed, providing a serene driving experience. The chassis and suspension may be tuned more towards comfort bias. However, this car absorbs bumps with a solid, refined feel, avoiding the harshness often associated with budget EVs. At the corners, the Sealion 05 EV, is more agile than expected.
Power delivery is smooth, courtesy of a 218-hp rear-mounted motor that propels the Sealion 05 EV from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds. While it may lack the explosive acceleration of some high-performance EVs, it provides enough punch for confident highway merging and overtaking. At higher speeds, energy consumption rises to around 16 kWh per 100 km, yielding a practical highway range of approximately 370 km.
The Sealion 05 EV’s “God’s Eye” C (Dipilot 100) advanced driver-assistance system leverages 12 cameras, five radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors to deliver features designed to enhance highway driving. Adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist work seamlessly. However, it remains a driver-assist system rather than a fully autonomous solution, requiring constant supervision and input from the driver.
Verdict
The BYD Sealion 05 EV is a remarkably well-rounded electric SUV, particularly given its affordable price point. Its efficiency in urban environments and quiet cabin make it a good choice for city commuters. The thoughtful interior design with practical storage areas and user-friendly controls further elevates its appeal.
While its highway range diminishes at higher speeds, this is a trade-off common to many EVs and is unlikely to deter those whose primary use revolves around city driving.
For urban dwellers seeking an affordable, well-equipped EV that doesn’t compromise on comfort or practicality, the BYD Sealion 05 EV is an excellent choice. It outperforms many rivals in key areas.
