At the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show last month, GAC debuted the Pickup 01 all-electric concept car under its GAC New Energy Commercial Vehicle brand. The mass-production version will be launched in 2027 and be sold primarily in the overseas markets such as Australia, Saudi Arabia, Chile, and Mexico, according to the official recently, as part of GAC’s “One GAC 2.0” globalization strategy.
In 2024, the production and sales of commercial vehicles in China was 3.805 million and 3.873 million units, respectively. Among them, the production and sales of buses, pickup trucks, and new energy commercial vehicles all showed year-on-year growth, with cumulative exports exceeding 900,000 vehicles last year. Pickup trucks account for about one-twelfth of the global annual automobile sales.
In the Chinese market, pickup trucks has long been defined as a light commercial vehicle and has been subject to many policy restrictions, leading to slow development speed. At the same time, pickup trucks are becoming an important market growth point for Chinese automakers. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), in the first quarter of 2025, 62,000 pickup trucks were exported, a year-on-year increase of 31%, accounting for 45% of the total pickup truck sales.
GAC envisioned the Pickup 01 to be an “all-domain pickup truck”, suitable for both commuting and off-road driving, adopting GAC’s self-developed GAIA (GAC Adaptive Intelligent Architecture) platform that can dynamically adjust the suspension system, power output, and drive mode.
Overall, the GAC Pickup 01 has a mecha-style exterior design, equipped with large tires and a high ground clearance, paired with through-type headlights and taillights.
An advanced driving assistance system is also expected to be onboard the vehicle as well as digital side mirrors and hidden door handles.
Furthermore, the GAC Pickup 01’s “dual-mode intelligent cockpit” supports “full adaptation to construction sites, mountains, glaciers, and urban roads” scenarios.
The cockpit also maintains a similar mecha style as the exterior with red elements, featuring a flat-bottom steering wheel.
