On May 16, FAW-Toyota’s bZ5 all-electric SUV rolled off the production line at the joint venture’s new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturing plant in Tianjin, China. The bZ5 was also the 12 millionth vehicle produced at this plant. Official launch will be in June with 550 km and 630 km CLTC range options.
Pre-sale already opened last month. The standard 550 km long-range trim is priced at 130,000 yuan (18,000 USD) while the L2 advanced driving assistance trim (also with 550 km range) is priced at 160,000 yuan (22,200 USD).
From January to April this year, the output of FAW-Toyota’s NEV plant was 35,900 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 34%.
Built based on the e-TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform, the FAW-Toyota measures 4780/1866/1510 mm, with a 2880 mm wheelbase. The car runs on 21-inch rims.
Power comes from a front electric motor with a maximum power of 200 kW (268 hp), supplied by BYD’s FinDreams subsidiary; matched with the BYD Blade lithium iron phosphate batteries in capacities of 65.28 kWh and 73.984 kWh, corresponding to a CLTC range of 550 km and 630 km, respectively.
In terms of safety, the FAW-Toyota bZ5 is equipped with the Momenta 5.0 L2 urban advanced driving assistance system, supported by 33 sensors, including a roof lidar, five millimeter-wave radars, and seven cameras. The official claimed the system can realize more than 30 navigation on autopilot capabilities such as intelligent parking assistance, remote parking, and Toyota Safety Sense.
Furthermore, nine airbags are present throughout the interior.
Taking a look at the cockpit, the red background is bold, combined with a 15.6-inch floating central control screen, a narrow rectangular full LCD instrument panel, and a 1.44 m2 panoramic sunroof in which the official said can block 99.98% of ultraviolet rays and 99.3% of infrared rays.
The sound system comes from 10 JBL speakers. Additionally, AI face recognition, in-vehicle video call, and 256-color ambient lights are present.
