Changan‘s Deepal has officially launched its new flagship SUV, the Deepal S09 (see specs), and customer deliveries have begun. The company announced that, as of 24:00 on May 22, the model had received 21,168 confirmed orders. The S09 is available in five variants, priced between 239,900 and 309,900 yuan (approximately 33,100 to 42,800 USD). With government subsidies, the effective starting price drops to 204,900 yuan (around 28,300 USD). Deepal has also confirmed that the S09 will receive an upgrade to Huawei’s ADS 4.0 autonomous driving system in the second half of 2025.

The S09 is positioned in the premium plug-in hybrid SUV segment and aimed at competitors like the Li Auto L9. It features a range-extending hybrid powertrain and integrates Huawei’s driver-assistance technology. The vehicle’s dimensions—5205/1996/1800mm and a 3,105 mm wheelbase—place it in the full-size category with a standard six-seat layout.

The S09 is equipped with a HarmonySpace 5 cockpit system. This includes dual 15.6-inch 2.5K resolution screens for the front occupants, a 43-inch augmented reality head-up display, and a 21.4-inch 3K rear entertainment screen with an adjustable viewing angle between 0 and 75 degrees. A sliding centre console, mounted on a 700 mm track, moves between the first and second rows and incorporates wireless charging pads, storage compartments, and a 10-litre refrigerator that operates within a temperature range of -6°C to 50°C.

The interior layout emphasises comfort, with 8-point massage functions in the front seats and second-row “zero gravity” seats that allow for 180 mm of lateral adjustment. The third-row seats are heated. Air suspension with 70 mm adjustable ride height and continuous damping control supports the vehicle’s ride quality.

The S09 is equipped with Huawei’s ADS 3.3 system for driver assistance, supported by a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor and multiple cameras. The system offers functions such as automated parking and garage-to-garage navigation. Coverage is expected to expand to 50,000 parking locations by mid-2025. A scheduled upgrade to ADS 4.0 is expected to roll out later that year for early buyers.

The S09’s hybrid system pairs a 1.5-litre engine with a battery pack rated at 40.18 kWh. It is offered in configurations of rear-wheel drive (231 kW) and all-wheel drive (362 kW). The electric-only range is rated between 210 and 220 kilometres under CLTC conditions, and fuel consumption is listed at 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres in hybrid mode.

Deepal provides a five-year warranty covering the vehicle or 100,000 kilometres, extending to 150,000 kilometres for the air suspension components. The battery system carries a lifetime warranty.

Stay tuned for this week’s Sunday China Drive for our review of the Deepal S09.
