Great Wall Motors has opened “blind” pre-orders for its V6 Cannon pickup following its performance at the 2025 China Taklimakan International Rally, where it secured six stage wins in the T2.1 production fuel category. The rally, one of Asia’s most challenging off-road events, covered roughly 4,500 kilometres over 13 days, with terrain including desert, gravel, and rocky surfaces.
During the event, the V6 Cannon benefited from its short axle length, lightweight body, and powerful engine setup, contributing to its ability to tackle demanding sections. The driver, Zhang Ya, and co-driver, Bai Yao, both experienced in off-road racing, successfully managed the vehicle through complex terrain, demonstrating consistent performance. Competing in the T2 category, which requires stock powertrains, the V6 Cannon’s factory-level durability and reliability were tested under extreme conditions.
The rally featured 10 special stages, with the V6 Cannon taking first place in multiple segments, including SS1, SS2, SS3, SS7, SS8, and SS10. The vehicle’s capability to maintain performance in the original factory configuration underlines its engineering robustness. This distinguishes it from cars in the T1 group, which allow extensive modifications.
The V6 Cannon is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. It delivers a maximum power output of 260 kW (approximately 354 hp) and 500 N·m peak torque. Its cooling system uses an electronically controlled BorgWarner silicon oil fan to manage temperatures during extended high-load operations at around 4,000 rpm. The vehicle has a wheelbase of 2,745 mm and a curb weight of 2,285 kg, allowing it to navigate uneven terrain with stability.
Suspension components include an eight-stage adjustable shock absorber, and the drivetrain features electronic front and rear differential locks with multiple off-road driving modes to optimise traction.
Safety features include underbody armour, reinforced steel components, and an updated braking system with electronic booster support. The 360-degree panoramic camera and chassis visualisation system assist in obstacle detection and terrain assessment, supporting safer navigation during the rally.
The V6 Cannon’s starting price is 258,000 yuan (approximately 36,000 USD), with additional trim levels expected to offer more equipment at higher prices. Blind pre-orders allow early reservations, although the exact delivery timeline remains unspecified.
The Taklimakan Rally is recognised for its difficulty in testing vehicles on harsh and varied terrain. The V6 Cannon’s results in this environment objectively evaluate its production-level durability and off-road capability. The data and experience from the rally are expected to inform ongoing improvements to the vehicle’s reliability.
Great Wall Motors competes in a segment that includes other midsize and full-size pickups, many designed to meet commercial and recreational needs. The V6 Cannon’s performance in a demanding race environment offers insight into its suitability for users requiring a balance of rugged capability and everyday functionality.
