Chinese automaker BYD has officially denied recent reports claiming that its highly anticipated solid-state battery technology will be installed in the Seal electric sedan. “The information is false. At present, everything is still unknown,” the company addressed the rumour on June 23, CLS reports.

According to BYD CTO Sun Huajun’s remarks earlier this year, outlining the company’s timeline for solid-state battery commercialisation. Demonstration-scale deployment is expected around 2027, with mass-market adoption targeted for post-2030 once production scaling is achieved.

The rumour originated from speculative reports suggesting that BYD’s Seal model would debut the new battery, featuring a record-breaking energy density of 400 Wh/kg and enabling a CLTC-rated range of up to 1,500 kilometres (932 miles) from a 12-minute charge. Some reports even cited a total range of 1,875 kilometres (1,165 miles) based on partial charge estimates.

Internally, BYD has spent more than a decade developing solid-state battery technology. The firm began testing 20Ah and 60Ah solid-state cells last year and reportedly achieved key breakthroughs in energy density and fast-charging capability. Despite promising early test results, including potential parity in cost with current liquid lithium-ion batteries by the end of the decade, BYD has emphasised that mass production is still years away.

While BYD’s denial tempers short-term expectations, its ongoing test program and long-term roadmap signal strong intent to lead the next wave of battery innovation. For now, the public should approach any model-specific claims about BYD’s solid-state rollout with caution, unless confirmed by the company.
