SAIC Motor has begun mass production of the updated MG4 electric hatchback, with the first unit rolling off the assembly line at the Nanjing facility. The vehicle is scheduled for official market debut in August, with complete specifications and pricing expected to be released at that time.

The new MG4 introduces a refreshed design, revised dimensions, and updated technology. Regulatory filings confirm the car is equipped with a 120 kW rear-mounted electric motor, consistent with a single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration. It retains the front MacPherson strut and rear five-link independent suspension layout used in the outgoing model.

In terms of size, the new MG4 now measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. This marks an increase over the current version, which is 4,287 mm long with a 2,705 mm wheelbase. The added length and extended wheelbase may offer increased cabin or cargo space, positioning it slightly above key rivals such as the BYD Dolphin.

One of the key new visual features includes an illuminated front emblem. The front-end styling draws from MG’s electric roadster, the MG Cyberster, incorporating a sculpted fascia and separated headlamp units. The overall silhouette adopts a wide-body stance and shortened overhangs, emphasising stability and presence.

MG is also introducing two new exterior paint finishes. Donglai Purple (东来紫) is described as a metallic purple with a pearlescent effect that changes tone depending on light angle. Qingbo Green (清波翠) uses imported European pearlescent pigments for enhanced contrast and colour depth.

Inside, the vehicle will debut the MG×Oppo cockpit system, a co-developed platform that integrates smartphone-based functions with the in-car interface. MG states that the system supports voice-activated commands, phone-app synchronisation, gesture-based navigation handover, and other connected services aimed at streamlining daily driving tasks.

While the brand director teased the possibility of a semi-solid-state battery offering up to 800 kilometres of range under CLTC testing, SAIC has not confirmed battery specifications or range figures.
