On July 25, Great Wall Motor (GWM) officially debuted its new Tank 500 Hi4-T and Hi4-Z plug-in hybrid off-road SUV. The new car has undergone upgrades in terms of appearance, interior, and advanced driving assistance capabilities. Pre-sale is expected to start in August.

For reference, the current Hi4-T and Tank Hi4-Z on the Chinese market have a starting price of 335,000 yuan (46,800 USD) and 363,800 yuan (50,900 USD), respectively. In the first half of 2025, 21,344 units of the Tank 500 series were sold.

The exterior follows the outline of the current model, with minor adjustments to the front grille and a new “GWM” logo in the rear. The new Tank 500’s body dimensions remain unchanged, measuring 5078/1934/1905 mm (l/w/h), and the wheelbase is 2850 mm. The approach angle is 29°, the departure angle is 24°, and the minimum ground clearance is 210 mm. Additionally, the new car offers optional towing capability, with a maximum towing capacity of 2,500 kg.

A new Dunhuang Green color is added to the exterior paint options on top of the existing Kunlun Gold, Pamir Silver, and Mount Everest White paints.

Most notably, a Hesai ATX lidar is installed on the roof along with cameras added to the front fenders and rear spoiler to support upgraded advanced driving assistance capabilities powered by GWM’s third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra. However, the official has not confirmed whether the lidar is standard across the entire series.

The powertrain specs also remain unchanged, according to Chinese social media Autohome. The Hi4-T version is equipped with a 185 kW (248 hp) 2.0T engine and an electric motor, mated to a 9HAT, outputting a comprehensive system power of 300 kW (402 hp). The 37.1 kWh ternary lithium battery pack provides a pure electric range of 110 km. The Hi4-Z version is powered by a 2.0T engine, but with dual electric motors, mated to a 3-speed DHT, outputting a combined system power of 645 kW (865 hp). The 59.05 kWh ternary lithium battery pack provides a pure electric range of 201 km.

Inside, the dashboard retains the 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and 14.6-inch central control screen with a built-in Coffee OS 3 vehicle operating system.

A paddle shifter is added to the steering wheel column. A 50 W refrigerator embedded in the center console has a temperature range of -6°C to 50°C. The rear passengers can also watch from a 17.3-inch 3K ceiling entertainment screen that supports six control modes including voice, gesture, touch, and remote control via mobile phone.

Furthermore, the Nappa leather seats are equipped with ventilation and heating functions. The rear seat backrest has a 25° to 35° adjustment angle. The maximum trunk volume is 1,489 L.
