Semi-solid-state battery debuts in mass production

The MG4 is notable for being among the first production vehicles globally to offer a semi-solid-state battery at scale. SAIC reports the battery successfully passed three-direction needle penetration tests without smoke emissions and demonstrates improved performance in low-temperature conditions. This innovation aims to enhance battery safety and lifespan, expanding consumer options within the affordable compact car segment.

SAIC has invested approximately 500 million yuan (approx. 68.7 million USD) to develop an aluminium-rare earth alloy for the battery structure, incorporating lanthanum and cerium to increase strength and thermal resistance.

Advanced connectivity powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 and Oppo

Inside, the MG4 features a 15.6-inch 2.5K floating touchscreen powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8155 chip. The vehicle debuts the MG×Oppo Smart Mobility System, enabling seamless phone-to-car integration with digital key functionality, AI voice commands, app mirroring, and device-agnostic compatibility across Android, Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, and other major smartphone brands. Over-the-air (OTA) updates will unlock features like phone-based remote parking and uninterrupted walking-to-driving navigation.

Performance, range, and charging

The MG4 is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 120 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque, reaching a top speed of 160 km/h. Two lithium iron phosphate battery options offer CLTC ranges of 437 km (42.8 kWh) and 530 km (53.9 kWh). Charging from 30% to 80% takes approximately 20 minutes, while the vehicle maintains an energy consumption rate of 10.4 kWh per 100 km. The car’s heat pump-based thermal management system supports up to 75% range retention after pre-heating at -7°C. Details of the semi-solid-state battery are expected to be available at the September launch.

Updated dimensions and exterior design

The new MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, an increase over the previous generation. Exterior updates include a redesigned LED-backlit MG logo, arrow-shaped LED taillights, and six available colours, such as Donglai Purple and Coral Red. Wheel options range between 16 and 17 inches.

Enhanced structural safety and interior comfort

MG utilises cell-to-body (CTB) battery integration technology, improving interior space efficiency and vehicle rigidity. The MG4 achieves a torsional stiffness rating of 31,000 Nm/deg, surpassing some luxury SUVs, MG claims. The battery system complies with IP67 and IP69K waterproof standards and undergoes rigorous safety testing. SAIC provides a lifetime warranty on the powertrain.

The cabin features EU Reach-compliant baby-grade synthetic leather upholstery, with 30 storage compartments and optional rosé purple and deep blue colour schemes. Front seats offer integrated backs with heating and ventilation, while rear seats recline up to 27 degrees. A panoramic sunroof with an electric shade is standard.

Safety and convenience features

The MG4 supports advanced driver assistance and convenience features, including:

  • Rain and night blind-spot visibility assist (OTA-enabled)
  • 360-degree surround-view cameras with transparent chassis view
  • Remote automatic parking with entry and exit functions
  • Rear privacy glass with enhanced light-blocking
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Vanity mirror
MG4 uses CTB battery integration, boosting space and rigidity with 31,000 Nm/deg torsional stiffness.

Cargo capacity includes 471 litres in the trunk and an additional 98-litre sub-trunk. Folding the rear seats creates a 1.87 m² sleeping area. Interior dimensions rival mid-size vehicles, with a 46.4° reclining front passenger footrest and 503 mm seat base length.
