Mazda, long recognised for emotional design and engaging dynamics, is advancing its electrification with the all-new EZ-60. Developed with Changan, the EZ-60 is positioned as a global model (to be sold internationally as the CX-6e) with planned launches in China, Europe and North America.

Offered as both a pure-electric and a range-extended hybrid, the EZ-60 goes beyond simply adding batteries and motors: it brings aerodynamic refinements, a digital-first cockpit and structural engineering designed to meet stringent global safety and quality benchmarks. Building on Mazda’s recent EV efforts, including last year’s EZ-6 sedan, the EZ-60 shows how the brand intends to preserve its driving DNA in the electrified SUV segment.

This test drive on Chinese roads highlighted how the EZ-60 reflects Mazda’s approach to preserving driving dynamics in an electrified era.

Exterior

The EZ-60’s exterior is instantly recognizable as a Mazda. It continues the company’s Kodo design language, with long flowing proportions, sculpted light reflections, and a stance that communicates both dynamism and stability. Despite sharing the EPA1 platform with Changan’s Deepal S07, the design is not a derivative; instead, it feels purpose-built as a new SUV with electric underpinnings and practical air vents throughout the vehicle.

At the front, Mazda has opted for a clean fascia highlighted by a pentagonal grille outlined with LED illumination. The logo itself is backlit, a subtle nod to modern EV aesthetics. Aerodynamics are integral to the design. Active intake shutters, discreet openings above the grille, and side-channel ducts guide airflow efficiently around and through the car. Even beneath the body, hidden wind channels contribute to cooling the powertrain while lowering drag.

One of the most distinctive features is the hollowed-out C-pillar. This is not simply decorative: the cut-through acts as a functional air passage, reducing turbulence at the rear and contributing to stability at higher speeds. It is a rare instance where engineering necessity has been turned into a striking visual signature.

Large 21-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV tyres, as fitted on the test vehicle, emphasize sportiness but have consequences for ride quality, which we will discuss later.

The EZ-60 manages to balance Mazda’s emotional styling with the practical considerations of an electric SUV, giving it presence in traffic and curiosity from passers-by alike.

Interior

Inside, the EZ-60 presents a departure from Mazda’s traditionally restrained interiors. For years, Mazda resisted large displays, emphasizing minimal distraction. The EZ-60 marks a philosophical shift: the dashboard is dominated by a sweeping multi-screen setup, replacing the traditional instrument cluster. The main screen stretches over 26 inches in width and features 5K resolution, paired with a secondary augmented head-up display. Together, these provide a futuristic cockpit environment while still integrating cleanly into the cabin design.

Materials reflect a layered approach. Our test car featured a two-tone purple and ivory-white interior, with fabric transition panels adding depth and tactility. The steering wheel retains Mazda’s familiar compact size and sculpted grips, trimmed in high-quality leather with chrome accents. Small details, such as a chrome-ringed driver monitoring camera and metallic-look finishes on the key fob, reflect Mazda’s focus on craftsmanship.

One standout feature is the use of electronic exterior mirrors combined with a streaming digital rearview mirror. These are not mere gimmicks; their usability impressed during the drive. Visibility can be digitally adjusted: at highway speeds, the system automatically widens the view, while turning and reversing expands the blind spot coverage. In poor weather, Mazda claims the system maintains clarity where traditional mirrors would be compromised.

The front passenger enjoys what Mazda calls a “zero-gravity” seat. With the seatbelt integrated into the backrest, support remains consistent even when reclining. In the rear, space is generous in both legroom and headroom, with amenities such as heated and ventilated seats, features rarely associated with Mazda until now. However, the seatbacks are fixed and relatively upright, which may limit long-distance relaxation.

While the cabin design is fresh and highly digital, Mazda has not abandoned its emphasis on tactile quality. Switchgear feels solid, the layout is intuitive, and the cabin achieves a blend of modernity and familiarity.

Behind the Wheel

Mazda has always been judged on its driving experience, and the EZ-60 is no exception. The steering immediately stood out for its linearity. In sport mode, weight builds naturally with speed, providing a clear sense of the front wheels’ grip. Feedback is more subdued than in a traditional combustion-powered Mazda, but the connection remains present, aided by the car’s well-balanced chassis. The low-mounted battery pack contributes to excellent rigidity and a planted stance, primarily through fast sweepers.

Throttle response is smooth and progressive. The electric powertrain delivers torque seamlessly, without the sudden surges some EVs exhibit. The range-extended version requires additional cooling, which explains some of the airflow management solutions seen on the exterior. Still, from the driver’s perspective, transitions between regenerative braking and mechanical braking are impressively natural. There is no jarring handover; instead, deceleration feels unified.

Suspension tuning leans toward firmness, especially with the 21-inch wheels. On smooth roads, the EZ-60 feels composed and agile, almost shrinking around the driver despite its SUV dimensions. On rougher surfaces, however, sharp impacts do filter through the cabin, an unavoidable compromise of the large, thin-sidewall tyres. A smaller wheel option with more cushioning would likely offer a forgiving ride for daily commuting.

Noise insulation is another strength. At highway speeds, wind and road noise remain subdued thanks to acoustic glass and extensive sealing. The electric drivetrain’s quiet operation enhances the perception of refinement.

On twisty roads, the EZ-60 demonstrated a natural flow. The chassis resisted understeer, body control remained tight, and the suspension kept the tyres in consistent contact with the tarmac. The car felt confident and stable even when pushed, reinforcing Mazda’s commitment to making driving enjoyable in an EV era.

Safety also played a role in ensuring the EZ-60 inspired. The body incorporates 86.5% high-strength steel with multiple reinforcement beams, complemented by nine airbags, including a central unit to mitigate side impact injuries. Knowing that this engineering lies beneath the elegant exterior enhances driver trust.

Verdict

The Mazda EZ-60 is more than just another joint-venture electric SUV. It represents a genuine attempt to merge China’s strengths in new energy technology with Mazda’s legacy of emotional design and engaging dynamics.

On the outside, it delivers unmistakable Mazda character while embracing the aerodynamic requirements of an EV. The hollow C-pillar, active airflow management, and illuminated grille are functional yet stylish solutions. Inside, it breaks new ground for Mazda with expansive screens and digital mirrors, yet still retains the tactile detail for which the brand is known.

On the road, the EZ-60 maintains Mazda’s reputation for driver involvement. Steering, throttle, and braking all interact smoothly, allowing the driver to feel in control and connected. The chassis is rigid and agile, proving that electrification has not erased the brand’s “human and horse as one” DNA. That said, the ride on 21-inch tyres can be firm, and rear seat usability could benefit from adjustable backrests.

The EZ-60 is scheduled to launch in China on September 26. Mazda has confirmed more than 40,000 preorders ahead of the event.

In sum, the Mazda EZ-60 succeeds in bringing Mazda’s spirit into the electrified SUV age while drawing deeply from China’s technical capabilities. It feels both familiar and new – a bridge between Mazda’s past and its electric future. For drivers who value both style and substance, the EZ-60 is a compelling proposition.
