New Volvo XC70 debuts as SMA platform SUV

Powertrain options pair a 1.5T hybrid-dedicated engine with electric motors, with outputs ranging from 234 kW in entry-level versions to 340 kW in higher-spec models. The top configuration enables 0–100 km/h acceleration in 5.28 seconds. Charging from 0% to 80% can be completed in as little as 23 minutes, and the SUV also supports 6 kW external power output for outdoor use.

From a design standpoint, the XC70 continues Volvo’s Scandinavian design philosophy, featuring a shield-shaped closed front grille, active air intakes, and the signature “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights, which incorporate adaptive matrix technology. At the rear, vertical taillights shaped like a Viking axe further emphasise Volvo’s recognisable styling. The SUV measures 4,815 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,895 mm. Customers can choose from seven exterior colours and multiple wheel options ranging from 19 to 21 inches.

Inside, the XC70 adopts a minimalist Nordic-inspired design with a floating cabin layout. It features a 15.4-inch central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 92-inch augmented reality head-up display. The system supports four-zone voice recognition, AI-powered trip planning, and wireless Apple CarPlay. The Harman Kardon sound system includes 23 speakers with immersive surround capabilities.

Volvo launches XC70, positioned between XC60 and XC90.

The XC70 also incorporates advanced driver assistance features. With 24 onboard sensors, the SUV is equipped with 21 safety and assistance functions, including emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and automated parking. The NPA intelligent pilot assist system is currently available on selected highways in the Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai regions, with broader coverage to be added via software updates.

Volvo has confirmed that the XC70 will be manufactured in Taizhou, Zhejiang, under global standards, with exports planned for more than 70 markets. Pricing places the model between traditional luxury SUVs and newer new-energy competitors, targeting both domestic and international markets.
