2026 BYD M9 MPV gets LiDAR and 218 km EV range, launching November 4 in China

BYD is preparing to introduce the 2026 BYD M9 plug-in hybrid MPV, known in China as the BYD Xia, on November 4. The new version retains the same overall design as the current model. Still, it introduces a key technology upgrade, featuring optional LiDAR and an extended 218 km pure-electric range —the longest yet for the M9 lineup.

As BYD’s largest plug-in hybrid people carrier, the M9 sits between the luxury Denza D9 and smaller BYD family MPVs, aiming at both private and business buyers. The 2026 update comes as BYD accelerates its MPV strategy worldwide. The same model was launched earlier this year in Mexico under the M9 name.

Externally, the M9 continues to utilise BYD’s Loong Face (Dragon Face) design language, characterised by a wide, chrome-accented grille and sharp LED headlights. The 2026 update introduces a new Far Mountain Green body colour. Dimensions remain 5145 mm long, 1970 mm wide, and 1805 mm high, with a 3045 mm wheelbase and a seven-seat (2+2+3) layout. Side-sliding rear doors remain standard.

One of the most significant updates is the addition of a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, which is expected to support BYD’s upgraded DiPilot B intelligent driving system. This setup replaces the triple-camera “C” version used in the 2025 model, indicating expanded semi-autonomous capabilities.

BYD’s 2026 M9 interior keeps its Chinese courtyard-inspired layout with refined updates.

Inside, the M9 retains its Chinese courtyard–inspired design, featuring a floating touchscreen, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and a column-mounted gear selector. The layout incorporates traditional design elements such as “Four Waters Return to the Hall” symmetry and geometric patterns derived from Chinese architecture.

The current M9 utilises BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system, which combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine (115 kW) with a 200 kW electric motor. Current models offer 20.4 kWh and 36.6 kWh LFP batteries, with CLTC electric ranges of 100 km and 180 km. The upcoming 218 km version is expected to feature a higher-capacity battery pack.

Pricing is expected to remain close to the current range of 249,800–309,800 yuan (approximately 34,300–42,600 USD).

In China, the M9 competes with other large hybrid MPVs, including the Buick GL8 PHEV (249,900–289,900 yuan / 34,300–39,800 USD) and the SAIC Maxus MIFA 9 Super Hybrid (269,900–309,900 yuan / 37,100–42,600 USD). In September, BYD sold 1,467 units of the M9 (Xia), ranking 11th among large MPVs.

Further details, including final pricing and LiDAR-equipped configurations, will be officially announced at the launch event on November 4 in China.
