Xiaomi Auto has had a patent titled “Vehicle Overspeed Alert Method, Device, Vehicle, Storage Medium, and Program Product” published on November 14, 2025. The patent outlines a system designed to alert drivers when their vehicle is moving significantly faster than surrounding traffic, regardless of whether the legal speed limit is exceeded, as reported by IT-Home.

According to the patent abstract, the system collects information from sensors about objects in the vehicle’s environment. It then identifies predefined types of objects to serve as reference points and calculates the vehicle’s relative speed compared with these moving reference objects. When the relative speed exceeds a set overspeed alert threshold, the system generates a warning intended to improve driving safety.

The background section of the patent notes that conventional speed monitoring systems typically alert drivers only when the vehicle’s speed surpasses the legal limit. Xiaomi points out that safety risks may still exist even when the vehicle is within legal speed limits, particularly if it is travelling much faster than other vehicles on the same road.

In congested areas or locations such as schools, dormitories, canteens, tourist areas, or construction zones, traffic generally moves slowly, so absolute speed may remain below the legal limit and not trigger conventional warnings. The patent proposes monitoring relative speed in these situations to identify potential safety hazards.

The system can adjust the overspeed alert threshold depending on the type of road or area. For example, densely populated areas may have lower thresholds, while highways and urban roads could have higher thresholds. By obtaining information about the road segment, the system determines the corresponding threshold for generating alerts.

For alert delivery, the patent suggests multiple methods, including displaying a visual warning on the vehicle’s central control screen or using text-to-speech functionality to voice the alert. The system is intended to provide drivers with real-time feedback when their speed relative to surrounding traffic exceeds a designated range.
