Beijing Auto Works (BAW) has released a preview of multiple new variants under the 212 T01 series ahead of their debut at the 2025 Guangzhou Auto Show. The announcement features silhouettes of a soft-top version, a pickup model, and a limited edition with unique exterior graphics. All three appear to be derivatives of the T01 platform, expanding the 212 product line, which was first launched in 2024.

The 212 brand represents BAW’s revival of the long-running BJ212 nameplate, a model with nearly six decades of history in China. Earlier CarNewsChina reports noted that the modern 212 follows the design direction of the classic off-roader, featuring a squared body, exposed spare wheel, and upright stance. The brand was relaunched in mid-2024 as part of BAW’s plan to extend the nameplate into a wider family of petrol, diesel, and eventually electrified off-road models.

The T01 series went on sale in August 2024 with three configurations: the Mechanic at 139,900 yuan (19,700 USD), the Explorer at 159,900 yuan (22,500 USD) and the Review Officer at 172,900 yuan (24,400 USD). A Long Wind special edition priced at 188,800 yuan (26,600 USD) was added later. These models utilise a body-on-frame structure and a 2.0T GDI turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, rated at 185 kW and 410 N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an electronic part-time Four Wheel Drive system. Chinese technical documents indicate approach and departure angles of 40 degrees and 36 degrees, a maximum gradient claim of 100 per cent, and a wading depth of up to 850 mm on specific versions. The vehicle also features an all-terrain system with eight selectable modes and a six-axis gyroscope interface that displays compass, pitch, roll, and altitude information.

Recent regulatory listings indicate that the upcoming pickup model is named Explorer 01. It retains the boxy 212 design language while adopting a longer body and cargo bed. The dimensions listed are as follows: a length of 5,469 mm, a width of 1,955 mm, and a height of 1,970 mm, with a wheelbase of 3,488 mm. The pickup variant is equipped with a 2.3T diesel engine rated at 140 kW and a reported fuel consumption of 9.1 L/100 km. Optional equipment listed in Chinese filings includes a roll bar, cargo covers, tow hooks and exterior styling elements.

BAW has not yet released the full specifications for the soft-top or limited-edition models. Further information is expected to be disclosed when the vehicles appear at the Guangzhou Auto Show.
