BYD has announced that it has produced its 15,000,000th new energy vehicle (NEV), marking the company’s cumulative production of pure electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) across its brands.
Founded in 1995 and entering automotive manufacturing in 2003, BYD has steadily increased its NEV output. The company previously reached 10,000,000 NEVs in late 2024 and 13,000,000 in mid‑2025, eight months after reaching 10,000,000, reflecting rapid production growth.
BYD’s cumulative NEV production exceeds Tesla’s total EV production of approximately 8.1 million battery-electric vehicles and Volkswagen Group’s cumulative EV production of under 3 million BEVs and PHEVs. BYD’s figure includes both BEVs and PHEVs, while Tesla’s output consists solely of battery-electric vehicles. This places BYD among the largest NEV producers globally.
The company’s cumulative production has been supported by its best-selling models, including the Dolphin hatchback (over 1 million units sold), the Seagull (Dolphin Mini/ Atto 1) (over 1 million units sold), and high-volume SUVs such as the Song Plus and Sealion 06. Models in the Dynasty series, including the Qin, Song, and Tang, have also contributed significantly to overall output. These models account for a large portion of BYD’s domestic and export sales.
BYD has focused on integrating technologies across its vehicle portfolio, including battery systems, electric powertrains, and intelligent driving systems. The company phased out production of pure internal combustion engine vehicles in 2022 to focus entirely on electrified powertrains.
The 15,000,000th NEV represents a substantial contribution to global electric vehicle production. BYD’s cumulative output continues to exceed that of major international automakers, underscoring the scale of its NEV operations. In 2025 alone, China accounted for a large share of global NEV production, and BYD’s cumulative production represents a significant portion of that total.
