BYD recently launched a home charging station sharing service on its official app, allowing BYD vehicle owners who live in the same community to share charging resources. The resource owner and user can negotiate the transaction details themselves, including specifying charging time slots and fees after exchanging contact information.

For electric vehicle owners with charging stations, if they are out or at work during the day, the stations will most likely remain idle. Sharing the charging stations during this time can generate additional income, making it a low-cost way to increase their earnings and increase the resource utilization.

For electric vehicle owners who don’t have a home charging station, shared charging stations in their residential community are not only closer to their homes and more convenient for charging, but also offer the advantage of no transaction fees and lower electricity rates compared to public fast-charging stations.

To operate on the app:

  • Open the BYD app service page and find the home charging service.
  • Set the community.
  • Find the neighbor’s charging station in the community.
  • Exchange contact information and make arrangement.

In addition to BYD, Nio and Xpeng have also launched a shared charging station function within its owner app. After setting up the shared charging station and charging time slot, other car owners can find the charging station and pay for charging directly through the app.

For example, an Xpeng home charging station owner shared that he set different electricity prices for different time periods (e.g., off-peak electricity at 0.35 yuan/kWh, with peak electricity prices appropriately higher), to cover electricity costs while allowing users to enjoy prices lower than commercial charging stations. The system also supports automatic settlement in which the payment is automatically processed after charging is complete.
