MG has shared the first official glimpse of the MG 07, an all-electric fastback that shares the aggressive DNA of its predecessor but sits on an entirely new platform. MG first teased this car at the end of January, fueling speculation that the brand was readying a direct rival for the Xiaomi SU7 and BYD Seal.

High-Voltage Architecture & Advanced ADAS

The most significant technical update is the inclusion of a roof-mounted LiDAR unit. While the current MG7 relies on traditional sensor suites, the MG 07 is designed for Level 2+ urban navigation.

Recent sightings suggest the cockpit will likely utilise the MG×OPPO intelligent connectivity system. This partnership creates an “Ecosystem Without Borders,” allowing for deep integration between OPPO smartphones and the vehicle’s terminal.

The vehicle is expected to debut on SAIC’s Nebula (Xingyun) platform, which is engineered to support an 800V architecture. Based on MG’s current technical direction, the MG 07 will likely feature the latest iteration of the “Rubik’s Cube” (One Pack) battery system:

  • Horizontal Cell Layout: The Rubik’s Cube system uses cells that “lie flat” to minimise battery pack height (as thin as 110 mm), improving interior legroom and lowering the centre of gravity.
  • Chemistry Diversity: The platform is compatible with LFP, NCM, and even the semi-solid-state batteries recently developed by SAIC and QingTao Energy, which target energy densities up to 400 Wh/kg.

Design & Dimensions

The MG 07 maintains the signature fastback aesthetic with frameless doors and a three-stage active rear spoiler. To accommodate the new dedicated NEV architecture, the wheelbase has been extended compared to the ICE model.

Market Strategy

The MG 07 is expected to enter the competitive 150,000-200,000 yuan (21,800–29,080 USD) bracket. By launching on an all-new platform with both pure electric and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options, SAIC is positioning the 07 to fill the gap between MG’s entry-level models and the premium IM Motors sub-brand.

Projections put the PHEV’s entry price at 165,800 yuan (24,110 USD), while the high-spec BEV featuring roof-mounted LiDAR is expected to reach 230,000 yuan (33,440 USD). Design choices like the panoramic canopy flowing into the rear glass and the signature metallic purple finish suggest MG is betting on a more aggressive, enthusiast-oriented look to steal share from the Leapmotor C01’s more clinical aesthetic.
