The 2026 BYD Seagull is preparing for a tech injection, as confirmed by recent sightings of an uncamouflaged test mule in China. The most striking update is the addition of a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, which accompanies a range bump to 505 km (CLTC). This 100 km increase over the current model’s ceiling is a clear move to stabilise the Seagull’s position against the Geely Geome Xingyuan, which has quickly become the segment’s dominant force.

Technical Brief

The uncamouflaged 2026 unit sports a LiDAR housing likely tied to the God’s Eye B (DiPilot 300) system. This shift moves the Seagull away from basic vision-only setups toward high-level ADAS, powered by an Nvidia Drive Orin chip with 254 TOPS of computing power. This hardware enables advanced features like automated valet parking (AVP) and urban express navigation. To help the car handle the extra weight of the new sensors and larger battery, BYD has uprated the motor to 60 kW (up from 55 kW), though the 2500 mm wheelbase remains unchanged.

Uncamouflaged Sightings: Road tests of the 2026 Seagull confirm a definitive roof-mounted LiDAR pod, a first for BYD’s entry-level Ocean series.

Market Context

BYD’s pivot to LiDAR comes as the brand faces heat in the budget sector. While the Seagull was a volume hero throughout 2025, January 2026 registration data shows the Geely Gemoe Xingyuan has overtaken it, moving 29,007 units compared to the Seagull’s 5,329. By democratising the God’s Eye B hardware, once the exclusive domain of flagship Denza and Yangwang models, BYD is fighting to reclaim its technical lead over the Wuling Binguo S and the GAC Aion UT, which are currently expanding their footprints in Japan and Australia.

To support this global push, BYD is sticking with its regional branding strategy:

  • Dolphin Mini: Latin America (Brazil/Mexico; excludes Colombia/Uruguay).
  • Dolphin Surf: Europe and South Africa (often with a 3,990 mm body).
  • Atto 1: Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Nepal.

Through its partnership with Robosense, BYD is expected to offer LiDAR as an optional upgrade for roughly 10,000 yuan (1,455 USD). This pricing is a strategic necessity; with high-level ADAS becoming the new norm in the 100,000 yuan bracket, the Seagull’s refresh is a vital defensive move to stop further market share loss to Geely’s Galaxy brand and Leapmotor’s B-series.
