Xiaomi Auto’s new SU7 receives 40,000 firm orders amidst ambitious 2026 product expansion
On April 2nd, Xiaomi‘s founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun announced that locked orders for the new SU7 have surpassed 40,000 units. This positive news follows the company’s report on April 2nd that its total vehicle deliveries for March 2026 exceeded 20,000 units. Of this total, the new SU7 alone accounted for over 7,000 units since its deliveries commenced on March 23rd.
The rapid accumulation of SU7 orders underscores the model’s initial success, building on Xiaomi’s extensive brand recognition and aggressive market entry. The 7,000+ deliveries in just nine days signal a robust start for the electric sedan.
However, the company’s journey hasn’t been without its shifts in market dynamics. The recent data suggest a cooling trend for the previously hot YU7. While initial waiting times for the YU7 ranged from 33-56 weeks, they have now significantly shortened to 7-14 weeks, indicating a dwindling order book. Cumulative YU7 deliveries surpassed 200,000 units around February this year, fulfilling most of the initial backlog. Goldman Sachs data from early March showed Xiaomi Auto’s weekly orders falling to approximately 4,000 units, a stark contrast to its peak.
Recognizing the potential pitfalls of relying on a “single blockbuster” model and the need for a more mature sales system beyond “Lei Jun’s endorsement and Mi Fan purchases,” Xiaomi Auto is embarking on a significant strategic expansion. In a move to bolster its sales capabilities, the company recently brought on Kong Yanshuang, former General Manager of Tesla China, in March this year, entrusting her with automotive sales responsibilities.
Xiaomi Auto’s another strategy to address order pressures and expand its market reach is an ambitious product matrix enlargement. The company plans to launch 4-6 new vehicles in 2026, aiming for a “pure electric + extended range” dual-track layout that will cover sedans and SUVs, 5-seater and 7-seater configurations, and a broad price range from 200,000 to 550,000 yuan (29,000 to 79,700 USD). This diversification is designed to create complementary order streams and cater to a wider customer base.
Key upcoming models include:
- Pure electric sedans:
- An SU7 Executive Extended Version. This variant will feature a 150mm longer body to enhance rear-seat comfort, directly targeting models like the Audi A6L and Tesla Model S for business and high-end family users.
- An entry-level SU5 B-segment pure electric coupe, potentially priced around 200,000 yuan (29,000 USD), aiming to broaden the user base.
- Pure electric SUVs:
- The YU7 GT High-Performance version, already declared with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This model will boast dual-motor all-wheel drive and a system power of 738kW (990 hp), targeting performance enthusiasts.
- Extended range SUVs (new segment):
- YU5 (codename “Kunlun N1”), a mid-size five-seater, set to compete with the Li Auto L7 and Aito M7.
- YU7 extended range version (codename “Kunlun N2”), a mid-large five-seater, positioned against the Li Auto L8 and Aito M8.
- YU9 (codename “Kunlun N3”), a full-size seven-seater, challenging the Li Auto L9 and Aito M9.
This matrix aims to address various customer needs, from alleviating range anxiety with extended-range models to accommodating family requirements with seven-seaters and expanding the user base with more accessible price points.
