BYD’s luxury Yangwang brand will unveil a new four-seat version of the U8L SUV at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show on April 24, according to Hu Xiaoqing, general manager of the brand’s sales division.

Flagship positioning

The upcoming four-seat variant is positioned as the highest-end model within the Yangwang lineup. According to Hu, the model will focus on upgrades in cabin experience, exclusive ownership benefits, and expanded personalisation options.

Pricing has not yet been disclosed, but the company indicated a clear separation from the existing six-seat version. The current 2026 Yangwang U8L starts at 1,300,000 yuan (≈ 179,400 USD), suggesting the four-seat variant will sit above this level.

Battery and charging system

The 2026 U8L lineup, including the four-seat variant, is equipped with BYD’s second-generation (Short) Blade battery and updated fast-charging technology.

The system supports rapid charging, with a five-minute quick charge and a full charge in approximately 9 minutes under standard conditions. In low-temperature environments as low as −30°C, charging time increases by about three minutes.

Range and efficiency

The updated U8L delivers a CLTC-rated pure electric range of 230 km and a combined driving range of 1,205 km.

These figures place the model in the upper range of extended-range luxury SUVs in China, where long-distance usability remains a key selling point alongside improvements in charging speed.

Structural and engineering background

The U8L is built on a body-on-frame architecture and forms part of BYD’s push into high-end engineering solutions. Earlier disclosures highlighted the model’s use of advanced structural concepts, including a one-piece cast-aluminium vehicle frame, to improve rigidity and safety.

The platform also supports features such as emergency flotation, tank turns, and tyre blowout stability control, enabled by its quad-motor system and hydraulic body control technologies.

Safety and software upgrades

The 2026 U8L also introduces three new safety-related functions:

  • Emergency floating capability with automatic activation
  • NOA-assisted tyre blowout stabilisation and controlled stopping
  • Full-scenario privacy protection system

BYD stated that some of these features will also be rolled out to existing models via OTA updates.

Design and configuration

The U8L continues to emphasise Chinese design elements. Exterior highlights include a distinctive front lighting signature and large 23-inch forged wheels.

The interior follows a symmetrical layout theme and offers a large cabin volume of approximately 5.3 cubic meters. The four-seat configuration is expected to further prioritise rear passenger space and executive-level seating.

Market context

Yangwang’s expansion into the ultra-luxury segment comes as Chinese brands begin entering a space historically dominated by foreign automakers.

In 2025, the Yangwang U8L ranked 15th among ultra-luxury vehicles in China with 1,538 units sold, while the standard U8 ranked 16th with 1,112 units. Both models were the only Chinese entries in the top 20, a list otherwise led by Porsche, Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz.

Vehicles priced above one million yuan accounted for less than 1% of total passenger car sales, indicating the segment remains niche but strategically important.
