A fire broke out early on April 14 at BYD’s Pingshan facility in Shenzhen, with local authorities and the company confirming that the incident was contained and that there were no injuries, reports Sina.

Fire at Pingshan facility

According to information released by local fire authorities and reported by Sina Finance, the incident occurred at 2:48 a.m. on April 14 in a multi-level parking structure located in the Ma Luan subdistrict of Shenzhen’s Pingshan district. District- and municipal-level emergency response teams, including fire rescue units, were dispatched immediately upon receipt of the alarm.

Videos and images circulating on Chinese social media platforms showed dense smoke rising from within the facility, with a visible smoke column extending above the surrounding industrial area.

Authorities confirmed the fire had been extinguished, and no casualties were reported. As of the latest updates, the cause of the fire has not been disclosed.

BYD stated that the affected structure was a “three-dimensional parking garage” at its Pingshan facility, used to store test and scrapped vehicles.

Facility function clarified

Statements cited by Sina-linked outlets, including Securities Times, indicate that the parking structure serves as a designated area for experimental vehicles and end-of-life units, rather than for vehicles in active production or delivery. This includes vehicles used for internal testing, validation, or disposal processes.

BYD’s clarification distinguishes the incident location from core manufacturing workshops within the Pingshan complex. No official disclosures have indicated damage to production lines or assembly facilities.

As of now, there has been no confirmation of operational disruption at the site. The Pingshan base remains one of BYD’s key production hubs, and available information suggests the impact was limited to the affected parking structure.

Charging expansion context

The incident comes as BYD continues to scale its charging infrastructure alongside vehicle expansion. The company recently confirmed it had deployed 5,000 flash charging stations across 297 cities in China, reaching that milestone within weeks of rollout. These stations support megawatt-level charging, enabling compatible vehicles to charge from 10% to 70% in about five minutes under standard conditions.

BYD has set a target of 20,000 such stations nationwide by the end of 2026, reflecting an accelerated infrastructure buildout. At the same time, the company is expanding internationally. Plans include deploying 6,000 flash charging stations overseas, with Europe identified as a key market alongside the rollout of Denza-branded models.

BYD production scale

The incident comes as BYD continues to operate at a large scale despite a shifting domestic market environment. In March 2026, the company sold 300,222 new energy vehicles, marking a recovery from February levels but still down year on year.

First-quarter sales reached 700,463 vehicles, reflecting a slower start compared with the previous year.BYD retained its position as China’s largest NEV maker in March, holding a 22.8% retail market share. Overseas markets accounted for a growing portion of volume, with roughly 120,000 vehicles sold abroad in March alone.

Industry backdrop

Recent data indicate a more competitive domestic environment, with multiple Chinese automakers expanding hybrid and electric offerings. Market data shows continued pressure on year-on-year sales despite month-on-month rebounds.

At the same time, BYD’s overseas expansion remains a key growth driver, with exports increasing significantly year over year.

Current status

As of the latest official updates, the fire has been fully extinguished, and no casualties have been reported. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the incident.

No additional damage assessment or operational impact has been announced.
