On April 23, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC L EV made its world premiere before the Beijing Auto Show 2026 opening. The electric SUV pays homage to Mercedes-Benz’s classic design while incorporating cutting-edge technology, including an 800V high-voltage architecture and air suspension derived from the flagship S-Class.

Exterior design

The GLC L EV features a retro shield-style grille inspired by the brand’s 1900 classic design. The grille incorporates 942 backlighting units that can illuminate and interact, presenting different breathing effects during unlocking and charging, complemented by a glowing star emblem. At the front, new LED digital headlights sit beneath the three-pointed star, offering adaptive high-low beam switching and automatic activation for enhanced safety and sophistication. The vehicle includes a 128L front trunk, providing storage for carry-on luggage.

Dimensions and space

Tailored specifically for Chinese consumers’ preference for spacious interiors, the GLC L EV measures 4,949mm in length, 1,970mm in width, and 1,710mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,027mm. Compared to the overseas version, the wheelbase has been extended by 55mm, and the body lengthened by 104mm, improving rear legroom and overall passenger comfort. The side profile features sleek lines and hidden door handles that reduce the drag coefficient.

The rear end showcases a new star-emblem taillight design that echoes the headlights. Three new exterior colours – Purple Silver, Mist Blue, and Ink Jade Grey – join the palette to satisfy diverse aesthetic preferences.

Interior and technology

The cabin continues Mercedes-Benz’s design language. A 39.1-inch MBUX super screen dominates the dashboard, comprising a 14.4-inch central display and a 12.3-inch front passenger screen. The system runs on the new MB.OS operating system powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip. A new virtual assistant named “Xiao Ben” (meaning “Little Benz”) supports OTA updates for continuous improvement. A head-up display projects essential driving information onto the windshield.

Comfort features include heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats with premium leather upholstery. A Burmester sound system and multi-zone intelligent panoramic sunroof with nine adjustable transparency zones are provided.

Driving assistance and chassis

The GLC L EV offers driving assistance, including highway and urban navigation assist, as well as parking assist functions. The chassis comes standard with air suspension that automatically adjusts damping and height based on road conditions. Rear-axle steering technology provides up to 4.5 degrees of steering angle, improving low-speed manoeuvrability and high-speed stability.

Powertrain and battery

The dual-motor powertrain delivers a combined output of 310 kW (416 hp) and peak torque of 800 Nm, paired with the eATS 2.0 electric drive system featuring radial motors and a two-speed transmission. An 89 kWh battery pack enables a CLTC range exceeding 700 km. The 800V architecture supports fast charging, adding approximately 260km of range in 10 minutes.

Mercedes-Benz sales performance in China. Data: China EV DataTracker

In the Chinese market, Mercedes-Benz sells roughly 30,000 to 40,000 cars a month, but its share of the high-end auto market is being steadily eaten away by Chinese luxury brands. Mercedes previously launched the CLA L EV in China as well, but sales weren’t particularly good.
