Nio’s Onvo L80 spied: large SUV to rival Model X

New spy shots of Nio’s upcoming Onvo L80 have surfaced online. Codenamed “Blanc” after Mont Blanc, the L80 is a six—or seven-seater electric SUV targeting large families. It is expected to launch in this year’s third or fourth quarter and compete with Tesla’s Model X and Li Auto’s L8.

Leaked images show the L80 heavily camouflaged but noticeably large. It is expected to feature a three-row seating configuration, offering more space than the five-seat Onvo L60 (see specs) launched last year. The L80 is expected to retain design elements from the L60. Spy shots indicate the wheels are positioned close to the arches, hinting at a possible air suspension system. The absence of a LiDAR bulge suggests it may lack Nio’s advanced autonomous driving hardware.

The L80 is rumoured to share the same 60/85 kWh battery options as the L60, though its larger size raises questions about the range. Built on Nio’s NT3 platform, which also underpins the upcoming ES7 (codenamed “Cetus”), the L80’s key advantage could be Nio’s battery-swapping technology, enabling quick battery replacements.

Positioned as a more affordable alternative to Nio’s premium models, the L80 is expected to be between 260,000 and 300,000 yuan (approximately 35,800 to 41,400 USD). Nio’s broader strategy includes launching sub-brands like Onvo and Firefly to target diverse market segments.

According to Onvo executives, the L80 is slated for unveiling in early 2025, with sales potentially starting in May. However, some reports suggest it might be named the L90 instead. Nio has yet to confirm the final name or specifications.

Nio plans to enter 25 countries by 2025 as part of its global expansion strategy. The launch of the L80 aligns with this effort, strengthening its presence in the large SUV segment. In 2024, Nio delivered 20,761 units of the Onvo L60 and aims to sell 240,000 Onvo vehicles in 2025.
