Volkswagen Anhui has officially released teaser images and design sketches of its upcoming all-electric full-size SUV concept, the ID.EVO. According to an announcement on April 15, the concept vehicle, developed explicitly for the Chinese market, will debut at an event in the Shanghai Auto Show on April 22.

The preview materials reveal an imposing vehicle with eye-catching design elements. The concept features slender headlights and taillights with what appears to be a matrix-like lighting structure, creating a distinctive illuminated signature. These lighting elements integrate seamlessly with the vehicle’s body lines, producing a flowing, tech-forward visual effect.

Design details include blacked-out A-pillars creating a fashionable two-tone appearance, conventional exterior mirrors, roof rails, and a rear spoiler—elements that balance practicality with sporty aesthetics. Based on the design sketches, the ID.EVO likely incorporates a closed-off front fascia and a full-width taillight that connects with the vehicle’s badge, design cues that have become increasingly common in modern electric vehicles.

While detailed specifications remain limited, Volkswagen has confirmed the concept will showcase advanced intelligent technologies and is expected to offer comprehensive driver assistance features. In today’s increasingly competitive electric vehicle market, consumer interest in smart vehicle technology has become a critical differentiator.

ID.UNYX, the compact SUV

This new concept represents a significant product direction for Volkswagen Anhui, whose only current model is the ID.UNYX (known as ID. 与众 in Chinese)—has struggled to gain market traction. The ID.UNYX, a compact electric SUV priced between 209,900 and 249,900 yuan (29,000-34,500 USD), measures 4,663/1,860/1,610mm in l/w/h, with a wheelbase of 2,766mm.

The ID.UNYX is available in single-motor (170kW) and dual-motor (250kW) configurations. It features an 80.2 kWh lithium battery that provides CLTC ranges of 614km and 555km, respectively. However, disappointing sales contributed to losses at Volkswagen’s Chinese partner, JAC Motors, in 2024.

As a full-size SUV, the production version of the ID.EVO will likely command a higher price point than the ID.UNYX. Full-size SUVs typically demand premium pricing due to enhanced space, features, and performance capabilities. However, the segment faces stiff competition from established models from Chinese automakers.

ID.UNYX

Volkswagen’s introduction of the ID.EVO concept signals the company’s continued commitment to the Chinese electric vehicle market despite recent challenges. The German automaker appears to be repositioning its electric vehicle strategy in China with a larger, potentially more premium offering that might better align with local consumer preferences for spacious, technology-laden vehicles.

Industry analysts will be watching closely to see how Volkswagen positions this new model in terms of pricing and features when more details are revealed at the Shanghai event next week, particularly as the company seeks to improve its performance in the world’s largest electric vehicle market.
