BYD is expanding its global portfolio with the upcoming launch of the M9, a new plug-in hybrid multi-purpose vehicle set to launch in Mexico on June 25. Effectively an export version of the BYD Xia, the M9 maintains the same platform and styling but adopts new badging and market-specific design tweaks. The vehicle will initially be offered in a first batch of 500 units for the Mexican market.

According to information from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the BYD M9 measures 5,145 mm in length, 1,970 mm in width, and 1,805 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,045 mm. Depending on the market variant, it retains a 7-seat layout and adopts a large front grille with vertical or horizontal chrome bars. Other exterior features include multi-spoke alloy wheels, conventional door handles, and a full-width taillight design. The tailgate carries the “M9” badge on the right and “BYD” lettering under the rear light bar.

Inside, the M9 follows BYD’s latest “Dynasty” interior design language, inspired by the Chinese “Four Water Courtyard” concept. It features a wraparound cockpit layout with options for dual-tone interiors such as brown + beige and green-gray + beige. Key technologies include a floating central infotainment screen, wireless smartphone charging, and BYD’s 3D Smart Cockpit system. The steering wheel badge replaces the Xia’s logo with the international “BYD” emblem, and surround-type airbags bolster safety.

Under the hood, the M9 is powered by BYD’s fifth-generation DM-i hybrid system. It pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. The engine delivers a peak output of 115 kW, while the electric motor is capable of up to 200 kW. Two battery options are available—20.39 kWh and 36.6 kWh—providing an estimated CLTC pure electric range of 100 km and 180 km, respectively. The system allows for a 0–100 km/h sprint in 8.1 seconds and a total driving range of up to 945 km.

Buyers can equip the M9 with various features, such as a panoramic roof, front and side parking radars, and D-pillar trim elements. The M9 is expected to compete in Mexico’s large MPV segment against models such as the Buick GL8 and SAIC Maxus MIFA 9 plug-in hybrid, which occupy a similar price and size class.

With strong Chinese domestic sales, BYD sold 2,611 units of the Xia in May 2025 alone. The automaker is leveraging this momentum for its international strategy. The M9’s arrival in Mexico represents BYD’s broader push into Latin America.
