GWM’s new Tank 400 PHEV off-road SUV debuts with refreshed design and dual electric motors
On September 22, Great Wall Motor (GWM) officially debuted its new Tank 400 in China. The new car has undergone an exterior design refresh, added a Hi4-Z variant equipped with a 2.0T engine and dual electric motors, and features GWM’s third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra.


The new Tank 400 measures 4964/1970/1905 mm (l/w/h), with a 2850 mm wheelbase. Compared to the current model, the new Tank 400 is 21 mm shorter, 10 mm wider, and 5 mm taller, while the wheelbase remains unchanged.


For the appearance, the new Tank 400 maintains its rugged exterior. The front grille features two horizontal chrome bars, complemented by polygonal headlights. The front bumper has been redesigned, shifting from angular to straight lines, and accented with black trim.

From the side, rivet details are maintained on the wheel eyebrows. The new car also feature a new “Dunhuang Purple” exterior paint.

In the rear, an external spare tire continues to be present, but the guard has been removed. The tail badge positioning has been adjusted, with the “GWM TANK” and “Great Wall Motors” logos at the top and the “Tank 400” and “Hi4-T / Hi4-Z” logos at the bottom.

Additionally, a roof-mounted lidar as well as side and rear cameras have been added to support GWM’s third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra advanced driving assistance system. This system can realize city and highway NOA. At the same time, the taillights are equipped with small blue lights to signal when the system is activated.
Consumers will be able to choose from two powertrain options: Hi4-Z and Hi4-T. The Hi4-Z variant uses the same powertrain as the Tank 500 Hi4-Z, consisting of a 2.0T engine, dual P2 and P4 electric motors, paired with a 3-speed DHT. The engine produces a maximum power of 185 kW (248 hp) and a peak torque of 380 Nm. The electric motor has a maximum power of 215 kW (288 hp) and 240 kW (322 hp), respectively. The vehicle is equipped with a 59.05 kWh ternary lithium battery pack and has a CLTC pure electric range of 200 km.
The Hi4-T model continues to feature a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a 2.0T engine and an electric motor, combined with a 37.1 kWh ternary lithium battery pack. The 2.0T engine has a maximum power of 185 kW, while the electric motor outputs 120 kW (161 hp). The CLTC pure electric range is 105 km. The fuel consumption of 8.4 L/100 km.

Inside, the cockpit layout mirrors the existing model, featuring a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 16.2-inch central control screen. Other features include wireless charging for mobile phone, a HUD, a digital rearview mirror, a 15.6-inch rear ceiling screen, and an onboard refrigerator.
