BYD marks 14 millionth NEV milestone with delivery to Brazil’s Head of State
On October 9, BYD’s 14 millionth new energy vehicle officially rolled off the production line at its passenger car plant in Camaçari, Brazil. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, Chinese Ambassador Zhu Qingqiao, Bahia Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues, and BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu attended the ceremony. The milestone vehicle, a Song Pro hybrid SUV, was presented to and registered under President Lula’s name, making him its owner.
According to information from Chinese media, the vehicle delivered to Lula is BYD’s first “super-flexible” hybrid model tailored for the South American market and produced as a COP30 special edition. It features BYD’s latest hybrid technology, designed to optimise both fuel efficiency and performance for local driving and fuel conditions.
Wang Chuanfu noted during the event that BYD has operated in Brazil for over 11 years and currently serves more than 170,000 local customers. The company has led Brazil’s new energy vehicle market for two consecutive years, supported by regional operations that include electric bus manufacturing, passenger vehicle production, and battery assembly projects.
President Lula said in his remarks that BYD’s investment brings renewed industrial momentum to Bahia state and contributes to the revitalisation of Brazil’s automotive industry. He added that the establishment of the factory represents an opportunity for the region to strengthen its industrial base through emerging clean technologies.
Wang also announced that BYD will supply 30 customised new energy vehicles for COP30, the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, to be held later this year in Belém. After the event, these vehicles will be donated to local schools and public institutions for daily transport use.
Ahead of the ceremony, the Bahia State Assembly voted to rename the main road in front of BYD’s factory “BYD Road.” It is the third overseas location with a road named after the company, following ones in Lancaster, USA, and Rayong, Thailand.
BYD reached its 10 millionth new energy vehicle milestone in November 2024 and achieved 14 million less than a year later.
