Leapmotor has officially filed details for its new A05 model with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) today. Positioned as an entry-level pure electric compact car, the A05 is set to slot slightly below the existing Leapmotor A10 in the brand’s expanding electric vehicle portfolio.

Visually, the Leapmotor A05 adopts a front-end design language reminiscent of its A10 sibling, with subtle distinctions in localized details. Measuring 4200mm in length, 1800mm in width, and 1560mm in height, the A05 boasts a 2605mm wheelbase.

The vehicle’s both front and rear tracks are 1525mm, complemented by 205/55 R16 tyres. With an approach angle of 14 degrees, a departure angle of 24 degrees, a front overhang of 845mm, and a rear overhang of 750mm.

Under the hood, the Leapmotor A05 is equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous motor (Model: TZ180QY057), supplied by Huzhou Leap Power Technology Co., Ltd. This motor offers peak power options of either 70kW (94 hp) or 90kW (121 hp).

The 90 kW (121 hp) variant has the option for LiDAR.

The A05 will be powered by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with three potential suppliers: Leapmotor’s Leap Energy, Gotion High-tech and Zernergy . The complete battery assembly will be provided by Leap Energy.

Leapmotor is also offering a range of personalization and practical options for the A05. Customers can choose from various optional features, including LiDAR, a front monocular camera, symmetrical left and right rearview mirror cameras, different styles of fender trim, a front bumper camera, a two-tone body finish, and various wheel rim designs.

Editor’s comment

Judging by its naming convention, the Leapmotor A05 is clearly priced lower than the A10 (internally designated B03X). The A05 measures 4200×1800×1560mm (length/width/height) with a wheelbase of 2605mm, while the Leapmotor A10 has dimensions of 4270/1810/1635mm and shares the same 2605mm wheelbase.

The Leapmotor A10 is currently the most affordable LiDAR-equipped vehicle known, and the introduction of the A05 is expected to further drive down this price point. Incidentally, the A10, originally slated for pre-sale on March 26th, will now be directly launched on that date instead.

With a target of selling one million vehicles in 2026, Leapmotor appears to be accelerating its new car releases, particularly focusing on cost-effective, compact models.
