Chery has launched the Rely R08 Pro pickup in China, expanding its Rely commercial lineup with a more rugged configuration aimed at both domestic users and overseas markets. The model continues the brand’s body-on-frame pickup strategy while adding upgraded in-cabin technology and strengthened export positioning.

Narrowing cost gap

The R08 Pro adopts a revised front-end design compared with the standard R08, featuring a more aggressive styling direction with a rectangular grille, integrated square headlamps, and a reinforced lower bumper with skid protection. The model retains a body-on-frame architecture and part-time 4WD system, targeting both utility and off-road applications.

Factory equipment includes all-terrain tyres, widened wheel arches, side steps, and a snorkel. The cargo bed supports multiple expansion configurations, such as flat covers and camper modules, with 36 integrated mounting points.

Exports

The Rely pickup family is positioned within Chery’s export-oriented commercial vehicle strategy. The standard R08 has already entered overseas markets, including the Middle East, with UAE launches under local distribution partnerships, confirming an established export pathway for the lineup.

The model is sold outside China under the Chery Himla nameplate, which serves as its international branding for export markets. The Himla lineup covers multiple variants based on the same pickup architecture and is positioned as a Toyota Hilux competitor in global markets.

Smart cockpit and connectivity

Inside, the R08 Pro features a simplified interior layout with a 15.6-inch central display powered by the Qualcomm 8155 chip. The system supports OTA updates, voice control, smartphone connectivity, and remote vehicle functions.

Driver assistance systems include Level 2 capability, 360-degree surround view, and transparent chassis view. Safety equipment includes six airbags and electronic stability control. Rear seat dimensions include a 500 mm cushion length and a 26-degree backrest angle.

Scaling up

Power comes from a 2.3T diesel engine producing 420 Nm of torque, paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. Peak torque is available from 1,500 rpm.

The chassis uses a double-wishbone front suspension and leaf-spring rear layout, balancing off-road articulation with payload capability. The BorgWarner part-time 4WD system supports 2H, 4H, and 4L modes, as well as front and rear differential locks.

Off-road geometry includes a 34-degree approach angle, 29-degree departure angle, and 230 mm ground clearance. Additional functions include tank turn and crawl mode.

Industry push

China’s pickup export market continues to expand rapidly, with overseas demand driving a growing share of industry volume. Industry reporting indicates strong export growth in early 2026, supported by established players such as Great Wall Motor in international markets.

This export momentum aligns with broader industry strategies, including Chery’s planned overseas expansion of its pickup lineup. A related development is the confirmed Australia-bound diesel plug-in hybrid ute program, which will introduce Chery’s electrified pickup strategy into right-hand-drive markets, directly competing with models such as the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV and BYD Shark 6, according to industry reporting.

Policy backdrop

In China’s domestic market, pickup demand remains concentrated among established leaders. Data up to March 2026 shows the Great Wall Cannon pickup family, including variants such as the Shanghai Cannon, continuing to dominate the segment, supported by a broad product portfolio and strong brand penetration.

Other high-volume models include the JAC T6 and Dongfeng Rich. Domestic pickup growth remains moderate compared with export performance, with demand still largely driven by commercial and regional usage scenarios.

Market positioning

The Rely R08 Pro enters a segment dominated by the Great Wall Cannon lineup, which remains the benchmark in China’s pickup market. Compared with rivals, the R08 Pro emphasises standardisation of off-road hardware, including snorkel, AT tyres, and differential locks, while also adding a technology-focused cabin featuring the 8155 infotainment platform.

The inclusion of a lifetime warranty for the first owner further strengthens its positioning in the value-oriented pickup segment, targeting buyers seeking multi-purpose utility, improved connectivity, and an export-oriented product architecture.

China’s domestic sales performance

In China’s domestic market, Chery recorded highly volatile monthly performance over the past year, reflecting broader pressure in the passenger car segment, according to China EV DataTracker. Domestic sales stood at 29,411 units in March 2026, down 25.6% month-on-month and 42.2% year-on-year, marking one of the weakest monthly performances in the period.

February 2026 showed a temporary recovery to 39,535 units, before falling again from January’s 43,938 units. Over the 12-month period from April 2025 to March 2026, monthly sales fluctuated between a peak of 54,303 units in October 2025 and a March 2026 low, while market share ranged from 1.8% to 3.8%, indicating inconsistent positioning in China’s highly competitive mass-market segment.
