BYD’s PHEV MPV Song Max DM-i leak ahead of launch. Price to be 27,500 USD

The new Song Max DM-i is a PHEV version of Song Max – popular BYD’s MPV. It is not surprising as BYD is on the quest to turn all its ICE cars into PHEVs. And it seems going well as ICE cars make only 2% of BYD sales with the rest being equally distributed between PHEVs and pure EVs.

Song Max DM-i has a new interior with a huge rotating screen and can run up to 105 km in a full-electric mode. With the highest price point at 27,480 USD, this car looks like every big family’s dream. The car will officially launch on March 12, but the configuration leaked today.

BYD Song Max DM-i exterior

The BYD Song Max DM-i is very similar to the regular petrol version. The front end of this MPV has got a “Dragon Face” design, standard for BYD cars. There are also a large trapeze-shaped grille and a sporty bumper on the front end. As for the rear of the BYD Song Max DM-i has a taillight unit with “Build Your Dreams” lettering above it.

The interior of the BYD Song Max DM-i has a new design. A new center tunnel has a crazy amount of piano-black plastic, a monostable gear selector, and wireless phone charging. Song Max DM-i versions go with the 12.8-inch touch screen, which can rotate landscape-portrait. And the top trim level of a BYD Song Pro DM-i got the giant 15.6-inch screen. It can also rotate landscape-portrait. The instrument panel of the top trim level is 8 inches in diameter. In addition, this MPV has got a new sporty steering wheel.

The interior of BYD Song Max DM-i is even more exciting with the lifted roof line option. It looks a bit strange from the outside, but it increases the interior space. Two trim levels of BYD DM-i come with the lifted roofline. Speaking about the BYD Song Max DM-i’s interior, worth mentioning there are 6 and 7 seat versions. 6 seat versions come only with the lifted roofline.

The dimensions of this vehicle are 4710/1810/1690(1880) mm with a wheelbase of 2785mm. There is a difference in height due to a lifted roof line possibility.

The BYD Song Max DM-i is a PHEV. It has 1.5-liter gasoline naturally aspirated engine (110 hp) and an electric motor. On cheaper versions of the Song Max DM-i, an electric motor generates 132 kW (180 hp). The more expensive ones are equipped with a more powerful electric motor. It has a peak power of 145 kW (197 hp).

The powertrain of a Song Max DM-i is E-CVT. BYD MPV versions with less powerful electric motor accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and have a fuel consumption of 4.4 L/100km. More powerful versions run up to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds and have a slightly higher fuel consumption rate of 4.5 L/100km.

BYD Song Max DM-i has an 8.3 kWh LFP battery with a range of 51 km (NEDC) or 43 km (WLTP). The more expensive versions of this MPV got an 18.3 kWh LFP battery. With this one, BYD Song Max DM-i can run up to 105 km (NEDC) or 85 km (WLTP). This battery can charge from 30% to 80% in 30 minutes. The overall range of the BYD Song Max DM-i reaches 1,090 km.

Speaking about price, BYD Song Max DM-i costs 146,800-173,800 RMB (23,210 – 27,480 USD). It isn’t on sale yet, but it will hit the Chinese market on March 12.
