On September 9, BYD brand Denza announced that sales of the D9 MPV exceeded 200,000 and that the 200,000th owner is a well-known singer. It is not totally clear whether the announcement means that the 200,000th D9 has actually been delivered or merely that delivery is imminent.

Zhao Changjiang, GM of Denza’s sales division, announced the news on social media, offering prizes for correctly identifying the singer. According to the post, the singer is nationally known and is nicknamed “Big Devil” by music shows. Speculation centers around the singer being Han Hong, Tan Jing, or Sun Nan.

Deliveries of the right-hand drive version of the Denza D9 will begin later this month in Hong Kong. The car has been a resounding success for the Denza brand, which had struggled for sales prior to the model. Launched in 2022 in both PHEV and all-electric versions, the car has consistently been one of the best-selling MPVs in China. It should be noted that it is just one year since the 100,000th D9 rolled off the production line.

Bar a slight difference in height, the measurements between the PHEV (see specs) and EV (see specs) versions of the Denza D9 are identical. The wheelbase is 3110 mm, the length is 5250 mm, and the width is 1960 mm. The all-electric version is slightly higher at 1920 mm compared to 1900 mm for the PHEV. Generally, the D9 is a seven-seater MPV, although there is a four-seater luxury version of the PHEV.

All-electric versions use a 230 kW electric motor on the front axle, and dual-motor versions add an additional 45 kW electric motor to the rear axle. The battery capacity is 103.4 kWh, which gives the single-motor version a 620 km range and the dual-motor version a 600 km range.

PHEV versions use a 1.5 turbocharged engine with a peak power of 102 kW. This, then, depending on the version, is either coupled with a single electric motor on the front axle or with a dual-motor setup. All versions use a 170 kW motor on the front axle, and dual-motor versions add a 45 kW motor to the rear. System combined power for the single-motor version is 221 kW, and for the dual-motor version, 299 kW. The base model has a 20 kWh battery pack, which gives an all-electric range of 75 km, whereas all other versions use a 40 kWh battery pack, which in the single motor version gives a 155 km range, and for the dual-motor 145 km except in the four-seater where it drops to 140 km.

Prices for the Denza D9 range from 339,800 yuan (47,980 USD) to 469,800 yuan (66,340 USD) for the most expensive seven-seat version. The luxury four-seat version costs considerably more at 600,600 yuan (84,810 USD).

It should be remembered that Denza started life as a 50:50 joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, but in 2021, the German company reduced its share to ten percent.
