The BYD Sealion 05 DM-i crossover arrived at dealers before the actual launch. It is an SUV with a 5-gen DM plug-in hybrid system on board. Its domestic sales start is scheduled for September 23. Later, it can enter overseas markets.
BYD Sealion 05 DM-i is the latest addition to the Sealion line. It is a series of crossovers under BYD’s Ocean family. It currently comprises Sealion 07 and Sealion 06 (BYD Song Plus, Seal U in some markets). Soon, the Sealion 05 DM-i will make the market debut as the entry-level model of the mentioned line. This car is a redesigned Song Pro, one of BYD’s bestsellers.
BYD Sealion 05 DM-i at dealers
The Sealion 05 DM-i at the dealer is finished in a non-metallic gray color. The same shade option was chosen to be the press color of the car. So, we can assume that the first batch of the Sealion 05 DM-i SUVs arrived at the brand’s showrooms for display but not for actual sales and deliveries.
The spotted Sealion 05 adopts the design language of the Warship series. It is also a line under the Ocean family. However, BYD stopped working on this series and switched to Seal and Sealion lines. So, the Sealion 05 DM-i has a large frameless grille, large rectangular headlights, and a BYD logo on the front. It has conventional door handles and R19 wheels. However, the Sealion 05’s tires look thin because of the wide wheel arches.
From the side, the Sealion 05 DM-i looks clean with simple lines and a suspended roof design. Its blackened pillars have thin chrome trim to make the car more appealing. The C-pillar of the Sealion 05 DM-i slightly curves after B-pillars and ends with a spoiler. In the back, the new SUV has a single taillight strip that highly reminds us of the rear end of the BYD Sealion 07 EV (see specs).
The interior of the mass-produced Sealion 05 DM-i was spotted in detail for the first time. And it’s nothing new to us as it keeps the distinguishing design language of BYD’s Ocean series. So, it has a rotatable suspended screen, a small crystal gear shifter surrounded by physical buttons in the center tunnel, and a D-shaped steering wheel. Unique features of the Sealion 05 DM-i are mainly circular air vents and a carbon-alike trim in the center console.
BYD Sealion 05 DM-i specs
The Sealion 05 DM-i is a mid-size crossover with dimensions of 4710/1880/1720 mm and a wheelbase of 2712 mm. It is 28 mm shorter than the Song Pro DM-i. For clarity, the Sealion 05 DM-i is 50 mm longer than the Kia Sportage (European variant).
The Sealion 05 DM-i adopts BYD’s 5-gen DM powertrain. It comprises the BYD472QC 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine for 74 kW (99 hp) paired with the TZ210XYB electric motor for 120 kW (160 hp). Transmission is E-CVT. This powertrain resembles the latest BYD models like Qin L DM-i, Song L DM-i, and Sealion 06 DM-i.
The fuel consumption of the Sealion 05 reaches 1.14 L/100km. With a drained battery pack, the fuel consumption rises to 4.9 L/100km. The stated energy consumption is 15.8 kWh/100km. The battery capacity of the Sealion 05 DM-i is 18.316 kWh, suitable for 93 km of electric range. The mixed range of this crossover is around 2,000 km.
The Sealion 05 DM-i will enter the Chinese market on September 29. Its price range has yet to be revealed. However, we at CarNewsChina assume, it will lie in the 100,000 – 150,000 yuan (14,100 – 21,170 USD) range. More on this car as we get it.
