On October 6, a Chinese blogger shared a spy shot of BYD’s new Fang Cheng Bao (FCB) Bao 5 SUV. The overall appearance of the car has not changed much compared to the current model, the most noticeable difference is the roof lidar while the lower edge of the side mirrors might be inlaid with other sensing hardware. This new FCB Bao 5 might be equipped with the Huawei ADS 3.0 (Advanced Driving System) similar to the FCB Bao 8.

On August 27, BYD officially announced that its FCB brand will cooperate with Huawei’s Qiankun intelligent driving brand, and the first model to adopt this technology is the FCB Bao 8 SUV. Later at the 2024 Chengdu Auto Show, Xiong Tianbo, general manager of BYD FCB, said that other FCB vehicles will also be equipped with Huawei’s intelligent driving solutions in the future in addition to the FCB Bao 8. Additionally, BYD has stated that it adopts a “two-pronged parallel” strategy in the overall planning of intelligent driving: open cooperation and independent research.

It is worth pointing out that Wang Chuanfu, CEO of BYD, currently views intelligent driving with the utmost importance, according to Yang Dongsheng, the general manager of BYD Intelligent Driving, in a media interview.

Regarding future product planning, Xiong Tianbo revealed that FCB will also have urban SUVs, sedans, and other products in addition to hard-core off-road SUVs. Starting from the Bao 3, FCB will open a new intellectual property (IP), and the FCB series IP will only be left to its large vehicles in the future while the FCB vehicles will also be built with several IPs at the same time.

For reference, the current FCB Bao 5 series (see specs) on sale has a price range of 239,800 – 302,800 yuan (34,200 – 43,100 USD). As the first product of the FCB brand, the Bao 5 was launched in November 2023. In September, the Bao 5 sold 5,422 units, bringing its cumulative sales to 36,135 units.

  1. As far as I understand, the Bao 5 is a PHEV with both a small battery, but also with a 1,5 ltr. ICE engine. Therefore not an EV. Please notice the difference in future articles.
    Thank you.
