On November 25, CATL launched four new models of the heavy-duty Tectrans battery, which is known as Tianxing in the Chinese market. Each is optimized for a certain usage case and aimed at heavy-duty commercial vehicles and construction machinery. The aim is to tackle industry pain points such as short battery life and slow energy replenishment rate.
According to CATL all four models feature 1,000V high-voltage architecture, which improves charging speeds by 43% and reduces energy loss by 50%.
CATL Tectrans Heavy Commercial Vehicle—Super Rechargeable Battery has a peak charging capacity of 4C and can be charged to 70% capacity in 15 minutes. It boasts an ultra-long life of 1.2 million kilometers and offers a cruising range of up to 500 kilometers. The pack size is 600 kWh. CATL says that in scenarios such as mining transportation, the charging time of heavy trucks is greatly reduced, and revenue is significantly improved.
CATL Tectrans Heavy Commercial Vehicle—Long Life Edition battery claims an ultra-long life of 15 years and as much as 3 million kilometers. It can withstand the battery attenuation pressure caused by frequent charging and discharging in high-energy scenarios, such as heavy loads and medium and long distances. It is claimed to be up to 500 km, and additionally, the battery can be swapped.
CATL Tectrans heavy-duty commercial vehicle—long-range battery has a 1000 kWh Battery capacity, which can give an ultra-long range of 800 km. Usage cases for this are express delivery and transportation where a broader service radius for the vehicle is required. Energy density is as high as 220 Wh/kg, and the battery is designed to fit into the chassis layout, which can expand the cargo space.
CATL Tectrans Heavy Commercial Vehicle—High Strength Edition Battery is optimized for the construction machinery industry. CATL says that it still has high safety after driving 500,000 km in mining truck applications, which is five times the industry’s usual requirement of 100,000 km for durability and strength.
It’s reported that this version has been used in more than 20 models from eight construction machinery manufacturers. Interestingly, one of the producers mentioned by CATL is XCMG, which also recently publicized a venture with BYD to produce new batteries for construction machinery applications. The heavy-duty version of the Tectrans battery meets the IP68 waterproof standard and has an armor coating that insulates against corrosion and harsh conditions.
Gao Huan, CTO of CATL’s domestic commercial vehicle division, speaking of the launch event, Said that a truck Fitted with CATL batteries at a copper mine achieved a full week’s operation without recharging, thereby reducing operating costs by 30%.
CATL launched the Tectrans battery brand in July this year and has previously shown the Tectrans B and Tectrans L series of batteries.
