CATL Tectrans – T is a battery developed specifically for heavy-duty trucks with a lifespan of 2.8 million kilometers. It can recharge 70% of SoC in 15 minutes, and the top trim has a capacity of 600 kWh, the company revealed at IAA Mobility in Germany on Monday.
Chinese battery giant introduced two versions of the new Tectrans – T battery: Long Life Edition and Superfast Charging Edition.
Tectrans – T Long Life Edition has an ultra-long lifespan of 2.8 million kilometers (1.7 million miles) and 15 years. The maximum range is 500 km, and it supports CATL’s battery swapping solution, which further minimizes the depreciation cost, according to CATL. The battery swap is provided thanks to QIJI Energy, which is CATL’s all-in-one heavy-duty truck chassis for battery swap.
“Having stood the test of time, this product sets a new benchmark for heavy-duty truck battery endurance,” said Aleksej Krükov, Chief Engineer of CATL Overseas Business, during the IAA presentation in Hanover.
Tectrans – T Superfast Charging Edition supports 4C charging and can refill the battery 70% SoC in 15 minutes. The battery capacity is 200 – 600 kWh, and the maximum range is 500 km. However, the lifespan expectation is lower than that of the Long Life Edition – 1.2 million kilometers (750,000 miles) and 8 years.
In Europe, CATL already partners with heavy-duty truck manufacturers such as Daimler Truck AG, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, and Volvo A/B.
Tectrans, previously called Tianxing (天行 in Chinese), is CATL’s new Commercial Vehicle Battery Brand, launched in July. It has three products:
- Tectrans – T for heavy-duty electric trucks
- Tectrans – L (L-Series) for Light commercial EVs
- Tectrans – B (Bus Edition) for electric buses
Tectrans L, sometimes called L-Series, was introduced on July 4. It offers a battery capacity of 30 – 200 kWh, 150 – 500 km real-world range, and a 4C peak charging rate of 8 years or 800,000 km lifespan. It comes in two trims: Long Range Edition and Superfast Charging Edition.
Tectrans B, also dubbed as Tectran Bus Edition, was unveiled last Friday during the online event in China. It has been developed specifically for electric buses. Energy density is 175 Wh/kg, a service life of 15 years, and 1.5 million kilometers (930,000 miles), CATL claims. Tectran-B will have a warranty of 10 years or 1 million kilometers (620,000 miles).
CATL plans to deploy the new Tianxing-B battery across 80 different bus models and has already established partnerships with 13 customers, including Dongfeng, Golden Dragon, and Yutong Bus, in China.
All three Tectrans battery types are based on CTP (cell-to-pack) 3.0 technology.
