The Firefly EV from Nio was launched in China with a price range between 119,800 – 125,800 yuan (16,770 – 17,600 USD). It is a small electric hatchback aimed to increase the company’s sales volume. The Firefly will also enter Europe. Similar to other Nio cars, the Firefly EV supports battery swap technology. BaaS service will become available for the Firefly on August 1.
Firefly is the third brand under Nio. Its first vehicle, the Firefly EV hatchback, started presales on Nio Day 2024 last December. The initial presales price of this model was 148,800 yuan (20,830 USD). On April 19, Firefly’s price was sliced by 19.5% as it officially started sales in China. Nio will kick off deliveries of its first urban hatchback on April 29.
The Firefly EV goes against Nio’s design language. The new model is a funky hatchback with distinguishing round headlights and taillights, flush door handles, and a blackened roof. The Firefly boasts five exterior color variants: purple, green, beige, white, and gray. The car’s dimensions are 4003/1781/1557 mm with a wheelbase of 2,615 mm. For clarity, the Firefly is 145 mm longer than the Spotlight Automotive-made Mini Cooper.
Aside from being compact, the Firefly boasts decent practicality for its class. It has a 95-liter front trunk. The car’s interior offers 27 storage spaces. The rear trunk has a 335-liter volume. With rear seats folded, the trunk space reaches an impressive 1,253 liters. Moreover, there is an additional 29-liter storage space under the right rear seat.
The Firefly’s center console boasts a 13.2-inch floating center screen. The 6-inch LCD instrument panel sits on the steering column. Other features of the Nio’s hatchback include 14 speakers with the 7.1 Dolby sound, a fragrance system, and 256-color ambient lighting. The Firefly offers 15 active safety functions. According to the automaker, its high-speed driving assistance system has a coverage rate of 99.99%. The Firefly can change lanes, overtake cars, and park in the street.
The Firefly EV goes standard with a 105 kW (141 hp). This e-motor helps the Nio’s hatchback to speed up to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds. The car’s top speed reaches 150 km/h. The Firefly has a 42.1 kWh battery pack with an official range of 420 km under CLTC conditions. The Firefly EV supports the battery swap technology. However, the Battery as a Service (BaaS) subscription will become available for it only on August 1.
The Firefly EV is available for purchase in two trim levels. They share the same powertrain. However, the top-trim car boasts enhanced equipment. It comprises heated, ventilated, and massaged front seats, more power seat adjustments, upgraded materials, and the front passenger seat’s memory. Prices of the Firefly EV are as follows:
With a given price range, the Nio’s hatchback will rival such cars as Volkswagen ID.3, Ora 03 (Funky Cat), Lynk & Co Z20 (02), and other vehicles. It will start deliveries on April 29. Later, the Firefly will also enter Europe.
