The Avatr 06 enters China’s electric sedan market with an introductory price starting at 191,900 yuan (approximately 26,300 USD), targeting the 200,000-yuan segment. The model, developed by CATL, Changan, and Huawei, marks another step in Avatr’s product rollout, making it the fourth model under the Avatr brand. With domestic deliveries expected to begin this month, the Avatr 06 offers fully electric and extended-range powertrain options.

We have tested all existing models from the Avatr line-up, Avatr 07 (see specs), 11 (see specs) and 12 (see specs). Let’s see how the new model stacks up against models like the Xiaomi SU7 and Model 3.

Exterior

The Avatr 06 makes an immediate visual statement with its sleek, aerodynamic profile and signature lighting design. Measuring 4,885 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width, and 1,450 mm in height, with a generous 2,940 mm wheelbase, it offers a balanced proportion that prioritises cabin space without sacrificing its coupe-like silhouette. The front end features redesigned F-shaped LED daytime running lights positioned lower on the fascia for improved aesthetics. Just like the Avatr 12, the rear adopts a camera-based system instead of a traditional rear windshield, enhancing both aerodynamics and futuristic appeal.

Notable exterior elements include standard retractable door handles, wide sculpted fenders, and an available digital side mirror system that replaces conventional mirrors with cameras, further optimising airflow. A roof-mounted Lidar sensor signals the car’s advanced autonomous driving capabilities. It also has 20-inch alloy wheels and flush-mounted trim pieces.

Interior

Inside, the Avatr 06 showcases a driver-focused, tech-rich environment dominated by a 35.4-inch panoramic display that spans the dashboard’s width, serving as both an instrument cluster and an infotainment hub. A secondary 15.6-inch central touchscreen handles primary controls. The optional digital side mirrors project feeds onto displays positioned at the base of the A-pillars.

Premium materials abound, with Nappa leather upholstery, soft-touch surfaces, and configurable ambient lighting. The front seats have 14-way power adjustment, heating, ventilation, massage functions, and a “zero-gravity” recline mode. A 25-speaker Meridian audio system delivers immersive sound, while a nano-ion air purification system actively improves cabin air quality by filtering particulates and adding humidity.

Practicality is thoughtfully addressed with features like power-operated front doors that lower the windows slightly for easier access. Thanks to the long wheelbase, rear passengers enjoy ample legroom, though the absence of seat ventilation or seat adjustments may disappoint some. Storage spaces are adequate, though the sleek door panel designs sacrifice some utility for aesthetics.

Driving Experience

Our test car is the extended-range (EREV) version, which pairs a 231 kW (310 hp) rear electric motor with a 1.5-litre turbocharged range-extending engine (115 kW/154 hp), fed by either a 31.7 kWh or 45.06 kWh LFP battery for 170-240 km of electric-only range before the gasoline engine engages.

On the road, the Avatr 06 impresses with its Taihang Intelligent Chassis, which combines a double-wishbone front suspension with a multi-link rear setup. Our test car features adaptive dampers and air suspension, which contribute to its confident performance in the 84 km/h moose test. The steering is precise and well-weighted, delivering sporty feedback without compromising comfort, while the Continental braking system with four-piston front callipers ensures strong, fade-resistant stopping power.

While the Avatr 06 has improved its driving dynamics compared to the larger Avatr 12, one issue remains with the Avatr 06. While the oval-shaped steering wheel offers an unobstructed view of the instrument cluster, I found it to be one of the more challenging aspects of the Avatr 12’s design. Much like the yoke-style wheels in some modern vehicles, this unconventional shape requires significant adjustment time, particularly during manoeuvres like U-turns, where traditional circular wheels offer more intuitive handling. The design prioritises aesthetics and visibility over ergonomic familiarity, which may frustrate drivers accustomed to conventional steering wheels.

The EREV version maintains remarkable quietness in electric mode, with the range extender remaining nearly imperceptible during gentle acceleration. Huawei’s ADS 3.3 advanced driver-assistance system enhances the experience with features like parking-to-parking autonomy and navigating complex urban environments with human-like decision-making. While occasional hesitations occur in dense traffic, the system remains among the most capable in its class, supported by the roof-mounted Lidar and 27 total sensors.

Verdict

The Avatr 06 presents a compelling package that blends avant-garde design, innovative technology, and engaging driving dynamics. Its spacious, tech-laden interior and versatile powertrain options address the needs of urban commuters and tech enthusiasts. At the same time, the available air suspension and advanced driver aids position it as a credible alternative to established rivals. Its driving dynamics may not match the Xiaomi SU7, but it is not far behind. In terms of luxury, it surpasses the Model 3.

For buyers seeking a distinctive, tech-forward sedan with premium aspirations, the Avatr 06 delivers substance to match its style.
