Spy images of BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao (FCB) Tai 7 SUV have appeared on Chinese social media, offering an early look at a model to expand the brand’s presence. Shared by user “敢越星河” on Douyin (China’s version of Tiktok), the images reveal a vehicle that blends the rugged styling FCB is known for with more subdued, city-friendly design elements.

The Tai 7 maintains the boxy proportions associated with FCB’s Leopard lineup but adds softened curves, bringing it closer in character to vehicles like the Land Rover Defender. Notable features include a roof-mounted Lidar sensor, hinting at high-level driver assistance, and an optional rear-mounted spare tyre container. Other practical additions include roof rails, side steps, and standard-style door handles instead of flush types.

Positioned between the Leopard 5 and Leopard 8, the Tai 7 is a midsize or large SUV. While still visually tough, its overall profile emphasises everyday use over hardcore off-road performance. This could compete with lifestyle-oriented SUVs such as the Tank 300 Hi4-T.

The Tai 7 is the second vehicle in FCB’s “Tai Series,” following the compact Tai 3, which launched with pricing between 133,800 and 193,800 yuan ($18,500–26,800 USD). FCB’s general manager, Xiong Tianbo, recently confirmed that more Tai Series models are scheduled for release this year, along with an all-new sedan line expected before the end of the year.

Analysts suggest the Tai 7 may start below 200,000 yuan (27,700 USD), undercutting the Leopard 5’s 239,800 yuan (33,200 USD) base price and making it a cost-effective option for buyers prioritising design and comfort over off-road capability. This pricing strategy would place the Tai 7 as a direct challenger to other hybrid SUVs in the segment. No details have been released; we expect the Tai 7 to have BEV & EREV variants. BEV will likely be upgraded over the Tai 3’s dual-motor AWD (310 kw, 422 hp, 4.9s 0-100km/h), with BYD Blade Battery for ~550-600km (CLTC) range. The EREV version possibly uses the Leopard 5’s DMO platform (1.5T/2.0T + dual motors, ~500 kw/680 hp), with a 100/ 125km EV range and 1,200 km+ total range.

FCB is organising its product strategy around three pillars: the high-end Leopard series for serious off-road use, the Tai Series for more versatile and affordable SUVS, and an upcoming sedan lineup to diversify further. This structure allows BYD to target a broader audience while maintaining a clear identity for each category. The Tai 3’s early sales success—10,000 pre-orders in three hours—indicates strong demand in this segment.
