The FAW-Volkswagen joint venture will launch two new energy vehicles (NEVs) built on the CMP platform by 2027. These models are developed in China. Moreover, they will be sold exclusively in the Chinese market with no plans for export. These vehicles will be available with pure electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain variants.
On June 4, the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture signed the memorandum of understanding with the Tianjin Economic Development Zone Government. The two parties agreed to jointly promote a new energy vehicle industry in the region. The FAW-Volkswagen assembly plant in Tianjin has a production capacity of 300,000 units. The FAW-Volkswagen Tianjin branch will launch two new energy vehicles based on the CMP modular architecture by 2027.
In May 2024, it was reported that FAW-Volkswagen plans to invest 2.3 billion yuan (319 million USD) to develop and launch three new models. On June 4, 2025, this JV disclosed more information about its upcoming model line. It has appeared that the FAW-Volkswagen Tianjin branch will start production of two more new energy vehicles by 2027.
The company shared that two new energy vehicles will stand on the CMP platform. We will remind you that the first CMP-based vehicle, the ID.Aura concept car was revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show 2025 in April. The company officials disclosed that the CMP architecture is the latest platform independently developed by Volkswagen’s branch in China.
The CMP platform will speed up the product development by over 30%. It is suitable for both BEV and PHEV models. Cars built on the CMP platform adopt the China-exclusive CEA electronic and electrical architecture. It is said to reduce 30% of control units. It also integrates a cockpit, smart driving system, and OTA functions. The mentioned two NEVs will sell exclusively in China.
The first CMP-based vehicle is likely the mass-produced variant of the ID.Aura concept car. It is positioned as an EV for young consumers. It adopts a minimalistic styling without visible door handles. The ID.Aura boasts a sleek roofline, a single taillight unit, and thin LED headlights. Its mass-produced variant will enter the Chinese market with a price range between 150,000 – 200,000 yuan (20,820 – 27,760 USD).
