The Hongqi HS9 PHEV prototype, internal codename P701, has begun pre-production at the R&D headquarters’ prototype division. It made its public debut at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show and is expected to launch later this year.

The Hongqi HS9 PHEV introduces a new design language to the automaker’s large SUV segment. The front fascia adopts a closed grille adorned with vertically oriented gold trim that lights up, emphasising its electrified nature. The L-shaped headlights feature a through-type LED setup with intricate dot-matrix elements. A signature red trim runs longitudinally down the hood, reinforcing the brand’s design DNA.

From the side, the SUV embraces modern styling cues such as blacked-out A-pillars, B-pillars, and C-pillars to create a floating roof effect. Additional premium touches include camera-based digital side mirrors, flush door handles, and large 23-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 285/40 ZR23 XL tyres. At the rear, the HS9 PHEV continues the design harmony with full-width circular LED taillights, gold trim accents, and an integrated hidden exhaust layout.

Under the hood, the HS9 PHEV is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine designed for hybrid applications, paired with dual electric motors as part of Hongqi’s proprietary Honghu Hybrid Platform. The powertrain will be further supported by advanced chassis technology, which includes fully active suspension and steer-by-wire systems.

The HS9 PHEV is expected to offer six- and seven-seat configurations, focusing on luxury and comfort. Notable features may include zero-gravity rebound seats, a climate-controlled “oxygen bar” cabin environment, and the advanced Siming 1000 driver assistance system, though full interior specifications remain under wraps.

The HS9 PHEV is positioned as a high-end large SUV, likely to compete with other Chinese luxury plug-in hybrid models such as the Aito M9 (starting at 469,800 yuan/approximately 64,800 USD), Li Auto L9 (starting at 409,800 yuan /approximately 56,500 USD), and Denza N9 (starting at 389,800 yuan /approximately 53,700 USD). Pricing for the HS9 PHEV has not yet been announced, but it is expected to align with this segment.
